One common problem that video game players have all the time are scratched discs. A helpful way around buying a brand new game or a disc scratch remover, is to first:
a.) Borrow the same version of the game from a friend
OR
b.) Rent the same version of the game from a store
Now, take the unscratched disc, and install it to your hard drive.
And lastly, now you can put in the scratched disc and go to "Game Library", choose the game, and select "Play from Hard drive."
The reason this trick works, is because when you play your disc from the hard drive, it uses minimal memory from the disc itself.
NOTE: Installing a disc to your hard drive does NOT replace having to put in the game to play it.
You still need a copy of the game in order to run it from your hard drive. I believe this is some security feature so people don't go around copying the games and not buying them.
Also, I would NOT install the scratched disc to your hard drive, for this will not help your problem at all.

I had this problem recently. What happened was you closed the game without logging out of Playonline. The long shut down I call it. This corrupts the FFXI data on your HDD. And since FFXI does not appear in the memory you have to format your HDD and redownload. I can guarantee if you put the disc in your xbox with no HDD that it will read or even place it in an xbox with a HDD that has never had FFXI.

Your disc unit needs to be reeplaced
