It sounds like your software did not install completely. What operating system are you using? Have you tried to download new drivers from HP,s web site. Did you get any errors on the driver installation? Here is a link for the new drivers. This may fix the problem.. I also found another link for your problem if your software only installed 96% and you only have 2 icons in HP director or solution center this will cause scan problems. Please look at 2nd link first. Please let me know if this helps.
1st link for drivers is. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c00836418&dlc=en&product=390315&rule=45505&lang=en&
2nd link for scan problem is http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00836418&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=390315&rule=45505&lang=en

Most likely you had some data corruption in the files that handle this feature and so when you try to reinstall it the files are not getting properly replaced.

So what you need to do is fully uninstall all the software from the system. Then next browse to the install folder where the software was installed on your computer and delete the whole folder.

After you do this reinstall the software and drivers. If you still have trouble you may have an issue with Windows its self.

Let me know how things go.

Before you do anything, i would suggest you to uninstall the complete printer's software and to reinstall it after running a registry cleaning (restart your system before you reinstall it).
If the problem still persists, please let me know. We'll need another measure.

The printer scan button wouldn't work for me either. I had to install the HP Solution Center software from CD onto my Windows Vista PC then I use its scan document software button to do any scanning.
