Maintenance required 004, can anyone tell me what this code is for on my epson 9600. Wondering if this is for the cutter or something else
Hello.
Your error code means the Pump/Cap/Cleaning assembly has reached the end of its life and
will soon fail. This is a major replacement part and it is typically more cost
effective to replace your printer rather than repair.
You can continue to print, but soon you will experience leaking ink, damaged hardware and poor
prints.
Hope this helps.
Whoever commented before was trying to sell you a printer and doesnt know what they are talking about. Its a $100 part that is normal to chg and takes less than an hour by a tech, if he takes the time to clean and relubricate the system at the same time. This is the seal for your printheads, so less clogging, less nozzle checks, etc. Most routine of items on these printers and typically means the printer is due for a good cleaning. Can eliminate code by going into service mode and resetting life of the item, but well worth having it changed in ink waste alone.
Hi! I agree with Plotpro, Professional Epson users make a lot of money with their printers and Epson reckon they can afford a bit extra for after sales and service. Home users don't have that kind of budget so resetting the counter and giving it a clean are the next best thing. After buying my slightly venerable (old) 9600 the heads were clogged from inactivity, I got some cleaning fluid fromhttp://www.americaninkjetsystems2.com/ and went a hell of a lot better, now I have no blocked nozzles at all. They were very friendly even though I only bought a couple of bottles of cheap cleaner from the other side of the world. I love my big Epson but their idea of worn out and my idea of word out are at slight divergence ! :)

In most cases the printer driver software can have errors while being in use or is shut down. So to reset remove your printer from the PC and uninstall the printer software. Now reinstall the printer software and then connect the Printer to be detected as a new hardware as it will be installed. Now check the printer properties to see the ink levels.
Activate head cleaning before a test is taken . Sometimes it is possible that the head is not reacting to the need of the PC command or can be an issue with ink drying or poor ink cartridge contacts. Sometimes the power supply unit must be checked as a poor SMPS unit can deliver low voltage and cause issues to the printer function. Check all the leads and connections of the mother board , the tags to the ink cartridge. Also check the mechanical settings of the ink cartridge , if jammed or tight remove motor and manually free the drive before it is set back.
