I am trying to connect my old dell laptop to the intenet. I am using the usb port for the connection. When I put it in it says that i need to install the hardware but there is no disk. I have tried to download the drivers on a flash drive and do it that way. What am I doing wrong and what should I do?

Make sure that you are not running out of IRQ's. If you are running earleir windows like win98, you could be running out of if IRQ's. Win98 was bad about that. Try disable the printer and that should free up a IRQ for the adapter. If that doesn't there you go.

Hi,
The USB ports on the monitor will work only if you connect the monitor via a USB cable to your PC/Laptop's USB port. Sounds awkward. Doesn't it? There must be a USB cable with flat socket on one end and trapezium shape jack on one end. It should be in the box which the monitor came in. The USB ports in the monitor are just another extended USB ports for your PC/Laptop. If you can't find the cable mentioned above, it is the same cable you connect to a printer, scanner,........ In some cases you might need to install a driver which should also come along with monitor. Mostly you don't need to install.

Does your cable modem have wireless internet? If so, you can buy a Netgear wireless usb port adapter for about $20 and use that to connect wirelessly to the internet. Your pc has usb port connections - right? (Usb port looks like a rectangle)

If you don't want to use a wireless connection you can purchase a cable modem with a usb connection for about $65. You run the ethernet cable to the modem and then a usb cable from the modem to your pc.

If you have a serial cable connection on your pc (looks like a round circle with tiny metal pins in it) you can buy a gender changer and convert that to usb (in case you dont have a usb connection or need another one). You can buy one for about $11.

You can buy an I/O Gear bluetooth usb adapter for $13 and pick up the internet via bluetooth by putting it in your usb port but I'm unsure how well it would work with Win 98.

If you have another pc that has an ethernet connection you could use good old fashioned bi directional printer cable and network both computers together. You may need to upgrade to win xp for networking capabilities.

First check the "Device Manager", for any USB Driver "errors".
There are 3 USB ports for your Laptop, check all the ports.
If you are using XP on your laptop, is your service packs up to date? For USB 2.0 port to function properly you got have to update a least Service Pack 2 for Win XP.

1. Have you check your USB port? Just plug in any USB devices eg. Flash drive, external HDD... and see whether the port detect the USB devices.

2. Is the USB cable for the Printer faulty? Try a new USB cable.

No, it's not the only way, if you have an unused PCMCIA port in your notebook. The width of the PCMCIA port is about the height of a credit-card, and the height of that port is about the thickness of a few credit-cards.

Purchase a PCMCIA adapter that has two or three USB ports.
Insert the PCMCIA adapter into the slot,
and connect your USB device to one of the USB ports.

I have a Dell A940 connected to my old Dell desktop, which I want to keep. How can I get it to print from my new laptop? I cannot find any USB ports on the printer to connect.

Specs state that it is USB - probably a "USB-B" connector. Anyway, how is it connected to your desktop? Surely you can take the USB lead from the printer out of the back of your desktop and plug it in your laptop? Am I missing something here? Specs don't say it is a "parallel" connector (unless it has both). If it has both (and you are using the parallel connection (big plug with many pins) on your desktop then there should be a USB-B socket on printer next to the big parallel socket.

Any computer capable of running Windows ME is capable of supporting any external modem.

In the past, for "internal" modems, there were "hardware" modems and "soft" modems.
The "soft" modems had 50% of the hardware of the "hardware" modem,
and the rest of the "brains" of the modem were embedded
in a software device-driver that gets installed into Windows.

Fortunately, most external modems are *NOT* such "soft" modems.

There do exist external modems that connect to a USB port,
and external USB wireless-devices, if you want a higher-speed connection.
