Dell e520 running Vista fully updated had sound and stopped working. Device manager lists no devices under audio.
Audio system tray icon lists no audio devices and has a red cross on it.
Have tried installing driver from CD supplied with PC
Depending on the audio hardware configuration, you may have a hardware conflict.
If you have an expansion sound card (Usually a Soundblaster card in the slots below the video card) then you need to ensure the integrated audio in BIOS is DISABLED.
If you have no expansion card, then ensure the BIOS Audio device is ENABLED.
If integrated and no device found in Device Manager, turn it off in BIOS, reboot then reenable it and see if it is detected.
If issue still continues, try flashing the BIOS and see if that resolves. If no change, you may end up getting an expansion audio card or resintalling Windows to resolve.
Testimonial: "Thanks! That sounds like great advice!"
If it has Red Cross means it is disabled.
Right click on it and click on Enable and try once.It should work.
