I am working on my friends gateway mx6450 laptop when you turn it on it goes to a blank screen after the welcome screen. I have tried to run on safe mode. It goes to a blank screen with the safe mode border. Any suggestions?

I assumed tha this blank screen if not black ....and it is instead blue ...and the actually windows came on ...but do not run the windows explorer at the start up ...this can be fixed by reinstalling from the disk ...better not reinstalling but repair ..but during the boot from disc...after loading initial files and accept the license by pressing F8 ...just choose repair when it sees the previous operation system ..
the other way ..it sto run MSconfig from the start ..or from the task manager ..if the task bar do not appear on the screen ...
the task manager will activate by pressing ctrl/alt/del ...than after the window appear choose new task .... file ) and there on run gave the command run MSconfig ...this will bring a window where you have boot ini..... several diagnostic ...and START UP configuration ...go to this one ...and look in the list for windows explorer .....this needs to be enabled in order to show the stuff on the screen ...
Anyway ..this is a little more complicated ..and there is the possibility that this explorer program to be corrupted...so ..the first choice is the one for you ...just get a boot-able cd ...( operation system you use) insert it ...and reboot and press F8 to choose the boot device ... go for cd /dvd boot ...and press enter ...it wil start over ...and prompt you to press any key to boot from cd ....Do it ...and the system will start windows setup....choose repair when it prompt you for repair .or install new os...
