I have a 1996 ford taurus gl. my rear defrost dosent work. the light on the button dosent light up nor do i hear the click when pushing the button.i checked the fuses. there is a relay for it

sounds like you may need an alternator... theres not a short< your just losing battery power and the steering wheel being hard to turn is probably your engine cutting out... also it could be a seized up pully or a/c compressor...
You need to check the defroster coil for continuity from one side to the other.If it is an open curcut[no continuity] then either the glue used to repair the broke off terminal was of the wrong type[non-conductive]or you need to find the broke strip and repair it.Automotive stores sell repair kits for doing this,and they work to glue the connecters back on.
for front window defrost . behind the radio there will be a yellow vacume line that is to plug into a golden colored actuator up in dash board almost directly above the radio closer to the windsheild . if the hose has come off you wont have defrost .
you need to make sure the wires are on the glass on each side and there is no broken wires in the glass there is a repair kit at a auto store to fix if you have a volt meter test it and that way you can find the problem look for breaks in the wire in the glass and do not for get the wires on each side of the glass.
for rear defroster grid lines, there are tiny gaps or cuts in the grid lines. get repair kit and paint over gaps. use masking tape so lines aren't too thick. kit @ $10. you can do this.
