No, you haven't lost anything. When you restored your software, you only restored the factory stuff. You'll need to reinstall the driver for the external hard drive. After you do that, your external drive and data should be accessible.

Can i transfer information to a mac

If the external hard drive has been formatted on a PC in NTFS file format then the MAC cannot read data off this hard drive.
The FIX..
Connect the USB external hard drive to a Windows computer and copy your data off this hard drive to the computer.
Then format the external hard drive in FAT32 file format. (the MAC can read and write to data to and from a Windows PC)
Now copy the your data from the computer back onto the external hard drive.
Now you can connect the external hard drive to the MAC and download your data to the MAC.

I can't get my Simple tech mini 250GB to work Please Help!

Basically external usb drives are all the same. They have a usb interface and a drive interface. What happens is the usb interface usually dies after a while. The hard drive and your data are perfectly fine but you can't get at it.

There a re a few ways to fix this. One you can send to a data recovery center and spend $500 plus to get your data. You can sometimes send it in to the manufactuer but they don;t garrentee anything. Or you can buy a new external USB drive enclosure and put the drive out of yours into the new enclosure.

The drive inside is a standard laptop or small format harddrive. Absolutely nothing special about them. The hardest part of this is actually figuring out how to get the original enclosure apart. Once you get it open (or the tech does) then you just unplug the power and dat and remove any mount screws (maybe 4) and then revrese all of that into the new enclosure. Plug it in and you will have your data back. Thats all there is to it.

There are a couple of things to watch for. One is you may need a drive adapter dpending on what size or format of hard drive is in there. These are just a $3 cable adapter. The other thing is the odd enclosure formats or acesses the drive a differant way. If this is the case then waht you will need to do is get the same type of enclosure and move the drive. This is a bit more annoying and expensive but still cheaper than the data retrieval service by far. Even worse case you should be under $200, if its a normal usb setup then can be $20 plus labour.

Anyway don't panic your data should be fine.

Maxtor one touch 4 mini 250GB hard drive beeping

I had the same problem and the Maxtor/Seagate website did not have any solutions. I finally got in touch with Tech Support and got a fix. I was using it with a Dell tower and plugging into a USB port in the front. I also was using an after market cable.

I learned the Maxtor is a power hog and beeps and shuts down when it is not getting enough power. I did not know but the USB ports on the front of a desktop/tower computer do not provide as much power as a port on the back (the back ports are sometimes directly connected to the motherboard). I got a USB extension cable and connected it to a USB port in the back and it solved the problem.

I also learned that most laptop USB ports are not powerful enough to run the Maxtor. Mine would also not work if you attempt to share it by using an unpowered USB hub. I have gotten it to work with a powered desktop USB hub (Belkin).

I believe that this may explain why you get a "Y" cable with the drive. I could not find an explaination for the cable or how to use. There may be an accessory to purchase that attached to the cable and powers it.

My signature mini hd doesnt work........

With this situation, only a data recovery company can help you. I am afraid that there is some mechanical damage to either the case or the hard drive. If you can remove the case and test the drive, you may be half way there, but if drive is clicking, it is best you leave it to professional data recovery. That is what I do, but you don't have to send it to me. You can bring it to your local shop to see if they can help.

I was reinstalling WindowsXP and hit the wrong drive to delete. I do not know if there is a way to get back all the data I had saved on the 250GB signiture mini. If not I will have to reformat it. Thank...

Try to make it a primary slave and use any partitioning software to undelete the partition. if it will not resolve your problem then you need to utilize a data recovery company or re-partion and re-format it.

Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini 250GB External Drive Does not show up on my computer

If this is a Maxtor drive that you password protected and now you can't get it to work on another PC or new hard drive. I had the same problem. Fortunatly I had set it up on another PC prior to setting up password protection, so when I tried it at work I discovered that the software will not even load on the PC becuase of the Password protection. If possible you need to use the hard drive that it was first set up and turn off the password protection. Then it should work on any PC.

Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini 250GB External Drive Does not show up on my computer

I have a Onetouch Mini 4, operating fine on two computers with Windows XP but couldn't get it working on Windows 7. I plugged it in and it would be recognized but a message would come up saying there were errors and to scan. Tried scanning and not scanning and couldn't get the drive to work. If I tried to open it would give me the "access denied". I couldn't get to a security tab from a folder as none of them were working.
It ended up that I wasn't listed as an owner nor had any permissions so I needed to be added to the device.

Here is what I did -

System, device manager, disk drives, right click on onetouch, properties, volumes, populate, the select on touch volume, properties, security, advanced, change permissions, add, typed in my user name - hit checked names (it fixed the format), then hit ok.

Then make sure you set the permissions for all the users.
