Update the drivers for the drive and if necessary, download the latest software for the drive.

I would try re-downloading the Sonic software and also make sure you have all codecs needed for the player to read the cd's I recommend K-Lite Codec Pack.
Make sure all drivers are downloaded. If necessary, remove drive, disassemble and clean glass laser lens eye with rubbing alcohol and cotton swab. You can always try reinstalling the drive

If your laptop is still on guarantee, return it ,but if its expired ,then replace DVD ROM.I once came across this problem ,but it was on emachines D620 ,replacing DVD ROM solved the problem.

Not all Inspirons have CD burners (the 4 factory options were CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, and DVD/CD-RW. You can confirm that via Windows Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager and double click on DVD/CD-ROM drives to see what model drive you have, then just Google it to see what it's capable of.

In case you have either a CD-RW type drive or a DVD/ CD-RW drive and it doesn't want to burn CD's , then it's a bad drive.

Can read cds but no dvds

1) Clean your DVD lens with a cotton.
2) Change the data cable.

If these methods doesn't then there might be problem in lens.

I changed my motherboard and installed fresh copy of xp.Now my dvd rom doesn read dvds but only cds!should i install any driver utiity?

try to download some path file from the net for the motherboard then this may solve the dvd problem or you may have to change dvd drive

This drive reads a dvd but not cds. do you have

may be it's only a DVD ROM drive not a combo,
you will need a combo to read both DVD and CD
if it was reading CDs earlier then the CDs might have scratch in them, try with new CD.
did u make changes to the cables inside, if you did check if the cabels are connected properly to the drive

No it only has a CD read write and a DVD Rom player READ ONLY.

Cd rom problem

Try to play different cds from your dvd rom drive.
If all of them does play then i suspected the cd that you had inserted to play is faulty.

If all of the cds doesn't work, re-install your dvd rom driver. If it doesn't still read any cds then your dvd rom drive is faulty.

Note: If machine is under warranty no need to pay for the repairs.

After I reinstalled my pc, the toshiba dvd-rom (sd-c2502) only plays cds, not dvds.

Try re-installing your the driver for your dvd rom. Then try to put different dvds and check if it can read from your drive. If problem remains, I suspected it's your dvd rom is faulty

Is cd-rom and dvd-rom different?

CDROM drives can only read CDs while
DVDROM drives can read both CDs and DVDs
