To secure the wireless network , you will need to access the router set up.
You said that you tried all the links like 192.168.1.1, but nothing is working.
Did you check the IP address on the computer ?
First check the IP address on the computer and Default gateway number.
Default gateway will be the number that you will use to open the set up.

How do I prevent my neighbor from using my wireless router?

If you do not have any wireless network security enabled on the router, your neighbor can see this SSID and connect to the network without authorization. While this is generally frowned upon as being unethical, it is technically not illegal as you have "made the network available" by failing to secure it. The easiest way to secure the network is through the use of a WEP key or a WPA pass-phrase. WEP keys are generally 5, 10, 13 or 26 randomly generated characters long. WPA pass-phrases are just that - a phrase such as "The sun is yellow". Either method will prevent unauthorized users from accessing your network. Only those individuals who possess the key or pass-phrase are granted access.

These options is located under the Wireless > Wireless Security tabs from within the router administration. After login you can change the password.

Hi, I am trying to get my new Acer up and running. It will not connect to the internet. It is asking me to type in the network security key. I have no idea what it is asking for. Please help.

Its the password for your network. If your trying to use someone elses network you need to ask them. If it yours then you should know your security password for your network.

Remove the neighbor's network from the preferred network list.
add your own network in the list. If your router is old router then upgrade the firmware of the router. Firmware is the software of the router.
You have connected your laptop to the router, to secure the wireless network. When you connect the laptop to the router, make sure that the wireless network connection will be disabled.
Once you change the wireless settings, enable the wireless connection and connect to your network.

I'm looking for a wireless network for my ipod but i don't know the password

If you are connecting to your own wireless network, ask the person in charge of the network (network admin). If you are attempting to connect to another wireless network (neighbor), they have their network secured with a passcode to stop others from "leeching" off of their service. If you know them you can ask them for it, if not you can scan again and look at the network to see if it is password protected "WEP" or unsecured. You can connect to a network which is unsecured. I hope this helps and good luck. Please vote appropriately and leave a comment.

Cannot connect MacBook to DIR-615 router

Is your wireless network secured ?
If you are trying to connect to the secured wireless network, make sure that the network that you are typing is correct.
If you are not sure about the network key
then check the network key on the router.
You said that MAC is able to connect to the neighbor's wireless network.
Make sure that the Wireless MAC filter on your router is disabled.

Neighbors can use our connection to log on to laptop

Consult your users manual for setting up either MAC Address Filtering, which will allow you to enter the physical addresses of your devices (unique like a fingerprint.)

AND/OR

Enabling Wireless Encryption (Wireless Security), which would require you to enter a pass code or pass phrase in order to access your networks assets.

How to get rid of old "unsecured" wireless network

SLRUSS63,

Are you referring to the Linksys SSID showing up when you browse for available wireless networks? Also, are you in an apartment building or otherwise relatively close to other houses/residents? It is possible that you and a neighbor both have Linksys APs and if neither was secured originally, your neighbor could have been connecting to your AP and vice versa. This definitely would explain slowness especially if you or your neighbor does any type of video or audio streaming.

One way to test this is to shutoff your Linksys router and view available wireless networks on your computer. If "Linksys" still shows up, it is most likely someone else's router/AP.

As long as your SSID shows up and you can only connect to it via the WEP key, your AP is secure.

Let me know if you get different results than I explained above.

I cant seem to get my laptop to connect to my network.......it has worked for about a month but for some reason it says its connected but doesnt all me online.

You may have a not very friendly neighbor, who has changed your setup in the router.
But, - you have the router, - what you have to do, is to find the "reset" on the back of the router, press and hold for about 30 seconds, and you have reset it to factory standard.
DO SET THE ADMIN password as the first thing you do, as this is why you neighbor could access your router.
THEN set some kind of security, to keep your neighbor from using your connection....
I will gladly help you with that one to, if you like.

Computer disconnects from Internet when my neighbor is using his computer

the Lock means that he has a secure network or he has the WAP enabled.. Can the two networks interfere? Yes. The two networks will "fight" over which one will your computer use to connect.. and sometimes you will connect to his network and therefore get no internet or limited connectivity.. You can make sure that your computer only connects to your network by permanently removing his SSID from your settings.

Picking up another network?

Do you perhaps have both Windows Wireless Zero Configuration and the
wireless configuration utility that is supplied by the mfr of your
computer's wireless interface running at the same time?

there are many cases of people accidentally connecting to the wrong network because both neighbors used default settings on their equipment. It is a very good idea to secure your network, both to discourage the casual wardriver (who will likely just move to an unsecured system) and to prevent accidental use by a neighbor

Also, make sure that you set your network as the default and disable the "automatically connect to non preffered networks" (or something worded similar to that.

Hope this is helpful.
