The "UMD" icon under games,on my psp slim,on the home menu, doesnt appear any more.Theres a swirl at the bottom of the screen, like its reading the disk, but then it always says after like 15 minutes,"the disk cannot be read".I have tried 4 UMDs,which are all in relatively good shape. Is it the UMDs,or the psp system?

Most likely the laser is weak. It has been awhile since I have changed a laser in a psp. But first off you should clean the laser with a q-tip and isopropyl alcohol and dry it with the other end of the q-tip. It doesn't take much for them to not be able to read a disc. If it still doesn't work you will need to replace the laser if you aren't that great at working on electronics or very small things you need to find someone to do it for you.
This is the XMB its the main menu of the system. Games will be located under the Controller Icon. To play games insert a UMD, or if a game is downloaded and saved on the memory card, go through the icons under Controller icon. A disk icon will appear and show a preview screen to the game, press X to start the game.
the umd drive is approaching its end of the life. you might need to buy http://www.consolezombie.com/store/slim-replacement-drive-laser-assembly-p-34.html and replace your umd drive. This is what i just did to my psp-2001.
PS: The above link is only for PSP-200x (slim version of PSP)
If you have custom firmware, make sure your "execute boot.bin" and "plain modules" are both disabled under your advanced configuration settings of the recovery menu. Also, make sure your ISO/CSO games are saved in the ISO Folder of your memory stick and that your UMD MODE is set to NO UMD REQUIRED. Your PBP Games should be saved in your PSP/GAME Folder.
Hi! I incounter this problem as well even without UMD its still loading and even I disable auto-start UMD still same so I tried reflashing the software but still same problem so I discover the solution before you turn-on your PSP try to open your UMD cover you'll see it will load faster then close again the cover once you see the battery and clock icon... The problem that causing this is the switch inside the UMD possible its stock-up or spoiled already!
