RCA LCD l46wd22 failed firmware upgrade

Sounds like corrupted firmware. A firmware update will make it OK. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Pull up older posts. Surf the site with patience.

If a LCD either a problem related to the back lights if used or a problem on the digital control (main board) and in either case not a do it yourself fix.

If there is an upgrade/s for it you would have to contact RCA (Thompson) to see where to get and what is involved in installing.

On this website if you look halfway down you should see L46WD22 firmware instructions and download. Read and follow the instructions to the letter as this has the potential to further damage your unit.

The back lights inverter is working because you can see the "Unusable Signal' on the screen, if the inverter is dead, yoo will see nothing on the screen at all.
If the T-CON (LCD controller) is dead, you will see just gray glowing screen with no pictures or text.
You may have problem with video processor in the main logic board (tuner, audio, source selector).

This is going to be difficult repair since you do have a way to try out the replacement board to be sure that is the problem. RCA service person has that advantage of parts in stock to try out.
I estimate the board from Jimmy to be about $150, from RCA will be twice as much, plus labor.

You have learned a painful lesson the hard way - never do an upgrade or firmware upgrade unless it is absolutely necessary to do so. Often, the procedure fails and you are left with a nice paper weight. Bet you that you did not save the original firmware (or were not given the chance to do so). If you cannot get it from manufacturer you are SOL. But you have learned, haven't you? Good luck with RCA.
