Hi,
Go to the online lobby screen where you get the option to select 'Find
Game' etc and then switch off the power to your router (don't just
disconnect your ethernet cable). Press 'X' to exit the 'You have been
disconnected... ' screen and then exit the game to go back to the PS3
menu. Plug your router back in and sign back into the PS Network. Then
try COD4 again and it will work.
I honestly thought this was a load of **** when I read it, but it definitely worked for me and my problem was exactly the same as yours!

Well I would do the network setting again and if it works fine it might
just be the location of your console or where your router connection
is. If it wireless connection then you might want to go wire the best
connection wireless is within a couple of feet my ps3 and my router is
about 5 foot away so I have a great connection but when I put it in my
other room to play it lags just a little.....so I would suggest either
going wire or moving your console a little close.
Make sure that you need to have the updated Firmware.

The only thing that would strike my mind would be Firmware. There were certain conflicts in the past due to which many people are unable to connect ( Intermittently as well ) and the certain patches were released to fix this. Kindly make sure you should have an updated Firmware.

If you have installed the firmware yesterday, then there is no need of looking for patches. In this case, i would advise you to get in touch with the store from where you purchased the game.

The location of the console is not the problem I am able to play other games multioplayer today such as modern warfare 1 etc but unable to play multiplayer for modern warfare 2. purchased yesterday was ablte to play multiplayer yesterday. I have a wired router which is located near the system. any other thoughts?
I installed firmware yesterday when i purchased the new game and played multiplayer yesterday. If the game just came out yesterday how can there be previous problems with the firmware? Where do I get a patch you referenced to fix the problem or should i return the game to the store where purchased?
