Hard drive not being recognised by laptop

I bought my hard drive about 6 months ago and it worked fine.
I lost the power cable for it and for about 4 months have been unable to use it.
I then found a power cable which I thought worked but was the wrong one, and then I managed to find the correct one.
However, now when I connect the hard drive to my laptop, it is not detected, and I cannot see it in My Computer.
The green light on the side flickers when connected to the power. I can also hear a whirring sound which sounds like something is spinning, I'm not sure if this is normal.

I don't mind losing the data on the drive but would like to get it working ASAP.

I'd be grateful if anyone know's how I can get it to start working again.

Thanks

The cable seems to be working fine. How would I check it though?

I am having the same problem, the drive will not show up on the computer screen, though the light lights up and it whirrs.  I have tried on two different computers, a laptop and a desktop, both macs.  I have tries different firewire cables, firewire 400 and 400 and USB cables and a different power cable. None have worked.  I would like to know if there is any way to fix the problem and/or get the information off the drive

Probably not the right answer for your problem. Mine is an external 1 TB Simple Drive. Mine wouldn't respond at all. I unplugged the power cable from the back of the hard drive and replugged it in and instantly it worked (with the computer and hard drive plugged in). I had tried rebooting the computer, plugging/unplugging over and over into the computer and that didn't work.

Try changing the USB cable that connects the hard disk to the computer, this message usually comes when the cable is damaged.

Laptop suddenly stopped recognising my external USB hard drive

I had the same exact problem with a WD2500xms passport. The problem was the USB cable. I went to the store and bought a 6' USB cable ( $26 at Radio Shack) with the same specs and now, no more problems. Also I called WD technical support (800.275.4932) and asked for a new cable. The WD customer serverice was very helpful and said it would sending me a new cable for free. When it arrives I'll return the 6'er.

External hard disk and pcmcia cardbus

There may not be enough power from the cardbus to run it. That bus is very low current to power it up so you will need the power cord.

Try reinstalled the card drivers.

Toshiba Hard Drive Crash

Hi,
if the datas aleady deleted, then you have nothing to lose. Right ?
What you need is a 2.5 to 3.5 inch IDE ribbon cable connector.
this will enable you to put the drive into an IDE slot on the PC internal motherboard ( primary/secondary )
Unless it,s already 3.5"
boot the computer, see if it recognises the drive. And format it.
then you may be able, to re-fit back into the external casing, and use as an external again.

Maxtor 3200 320GB Not being detected

if you plugged in an incorrect power cable it is very possible it could be damaged if the voltage from the incorrect cable exceeds the drive. try hooking it on another PC, to verify if it's the drive or PC

Hope this helps
