Lost instructions Recently purchased a sony dg510 receiver for my old klh 9900 speakers and dont know how to hook them up since I lost the speaker instructions. The sony receiver instructions only describe a subwoofer audio out (subwoofer doesnt have an input only the wire connects) and dont describe how to hook up the speakers to the subwoofer? very lost, if someone can help me from the very start and talk me through that would be great

The 'Subwoofer' output on your receiver is used to connect to a powered subwoofer with a built in amplifier. Your KLH speakers use what is called a 'passive' subwoofer, it gets its power from the receiver and then passes the higher frequencies to the left and right front speakers after taking out the low frequencies for the subwoofer. A speaker system with a passive subwoofer is good for casual listening, but a powered subwoofer is required for really hearing low frequencies and rumble in movies. The KLH speakers you have were highly rated in their time for their price. The four satellite speakers and center channel speaker have very good sound compared to the little 'midget' surround sound speakers most people buy today.

Here's how you hook them up:

- The left and right front channels from your receiver terminals should go to the terminals on the subwoofer marked 'From Amplifier'
- Your left and right front speakers are then connected to the subwoofer terminals marked 'To Speakers', they do not connect directly to your receiver.
- Your center speaker is connected to your receiver terminals marked 'Center'
- Your rear speakers are connected to your receiver terminals marked 'Surround'

That should get you up and running. If the bass isn't good enough with the passive subwoofer, you can get a decent powered subwoofer like the Velodyne VX-10 for about $150 and 'kick it up a notch'. Good luck and enjoy....

I have a pair of KLH AV5001 speakers and I have them hooked up, there is sound but it's distorted and there's zero base, an instruction manual or any advice would be great, thank you.

Without knowing what they're hooked up too.. SOUNDS like your uder powering them, OR over powering them. Look at the back of the speakers the wattage is what your looking for, look at your amp, example: 1000w speaker running on 50w amp = not good.

I connected up all the speakers and components and it works fine; however, I do not know how to connect the sub-woofer. Is it connected to the B speaker out-let?

There should be a subwoofer output on your receiver that it connects to. It'll be labeled "Subwoofer" and its typically a purple connection.

Sony STR-DG510 hook up with BDP-S560 no sound

The Sony manual for this receiver is not wrong, it is just a little misleading.
It does in fact use HDMI but ONLY for the HIGH DEFINITION video portion of the signal, as output from the receiver to your television. High Definition Multimedia interface carries both audio and video, however, your receiver is not decoding the high definition AUDIO portion of it and passing it through the HDMI, nor is it passing any form of multichannel audio through HDMI. So you can see why the receiver is no longer available for sale from the Sony website. The HDMI connection on your receiver is redundant unless you are not using a multichannel audio format, in which case you would be using either the TV speakers or connect an additional audio cable from the TV's "audio out" back into the receiver for external speakers.
All that should be done is use the HDMI cable from your blu-ray player connected directly to your TV. That will give you your picture, and possibly a better one since the receiver will no longer be in the signal path.
Then connect either a coaxial or optical cable from the blu ray player to the receiver for your audio. You will then be able to have Dolby Digital and DTS surround formats.
Your service person was wrong.

No sound coming from Sony Receiver STR-DG510?

Sounds like you are pretty close with this one. If you select fm tuner do you get audio. If not you may have the speakers on the wrong a-b setting. Make sure the audio from your cable box is not muted or turned down.

No sound from back speakers

Remember the rear speakers are called surround... Did you select surround on the unit? if it says stereo then you will only get fronts, select surround to get the rest.

No picture?

I called sony, even though the manuel shows that you can use a component wire to hook up the set top box and hdmi for the tv and dvd sony claims that you can not do this. The cable box must also be wired with an hdmi cable going into the video 2 port.sony claims it doesn't work using component and hdmi together because the receiver is unable to up convert. I hope this helps. I have not tried it yet (i'm at work) we'll see what happens when i get home.

Surrond sound

For Stereo Mode (Front L & R Speaker), you must plug RCA cables (match up red and white) from Output on DVD player to DVD Input on the back of the receiver. Then with speaker wire, run from receiver speaker output (Front Speakers) to designated speaker (make sure + and - match up to both input and output). As for hooking up surround sound, I'm currently trying to figure that one out with just using the L, R and Center. I don' t want wire running all over the place just for rears. Hope this helps
