The IP address 192.168.1.254 is the default for certain home broadband routers and broadband modems, including

  • some 3Com OfficeConnect routers
  • Netopia / Cayman Internet gateways
  • Billion ADSL routers
  • Linksys SRW2024 managed switches
  • Westell modems for Bellsouth DSL Internet service in the U.S.
This address is set by the manufacturer at the factory, but you can change it at any time using the vendor's management software. 192.168.1.254 is a private IPv4 network address. Any device on a local network can be set to use it. As with any IP address, however, only one device on the network should use 192.168.1.254 at a time to avoid address conflicts.

The best solution is to place the broadband installation setup cd into your pc. You need to make sure first that the router is not connected to your pc and also that your firewall is disabled, however, Windows Firewall can be enabled.Follow the instructions that are on screen until you are asked to enter your broadband username and password ( which were decided with your isp ) enter these into the boxes that are provided. Note that you may only be able to enter alphabetical letters, not underscores, commas, etc, etc. Never mind, leave these out and simply fill in the rest and click next! The software will then attempt to make a connection. If you had such things as underscores or whatever in your username, the connection will not be succsessful and you will in due course be told this. Click cancel and remove the cd. you should then see on your screen the router gateway, and you may be asked to enter your username and password. If your router has previously been setup, it's quite possible that after entering this information, all will then be hunkey dorey. However, in other situations if you enter: http://192.168.1.254/ into the gateway browser, you will find that you will than access the advanced gateway pages which will enable you to then carry out a PRELIMINARY setup of your router. A point that needs to be remembered at this stage is this: if you ever need to do a fresh installment of your operating system,ie: WinXP or whatever, your operating system will ask you if you want it to make an internet connection, and of course, for your requirements of setting up the pc with the fresh installation one will say ok. You need to take note that the connection will have to be re - initialised with the steps that I have setout above once you have completed you full re - installation ( although the connection that Windows makes, works, you may notice that your connection is slow, and the led's on the router go " mad "!! ) I hope this is of value to everyone. SOURCE: cant get into the settings of my belkin router http 192 168 2 1

Step 1 : Check the IP Address of the Computer

Step 2 : If it is in the Range of the Router ( 192.168.2.x)

Step 3 : Try typing 192.168.2.1 on the address bar of internet explorer

Step 4 : If not working Hard reset the router by inserting a paper clip into the reset hole on the back of the router

Step 5 : If the IP Address is any public address or 169.254.x.x then also do step 4

SOURCE: set up router/modem as instructed

Problem can't be solved as described, a fixer would need more details.

What kind of modem/router is it?
What instructions are you working from so far (you say, "as instructed" so I take it you're looking at a Quick Start Guide of some sort?)
How are you connected to it?
What http address are you going to (E.g. some routers use 192.168.1.1, others 192.168.1.254 or various alternatives)
What happens when you enter that address on a browser?
Have you set your computer's address to a nearby address so it can talk to the route?

If I had one guess with not enough information, I'd say you need to set your PC to an address one different from the target you're going to.
