They charged you for a sound driver...no way!!! Thats just plain nasty of dell. Downloaded from them many times before and they never once asked for money...sorry about that.

Did your laptop come with vista installed or did you upgrade to it from xp?

No sound icon, no sound at all

Look in device manager and make sure the sound card is installed and working correctly. Go into control panel, sound and audio devices, audio tab, make sure your device is listed in the default device drop down and selected, go to Valume tab and make sure the place volume icon in the start bar is checked. I hope this helps. Good luck and have a great day.

How can i enable the sound of my computer?

Start>Control Panel>(Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices>)Sounds and Multimedia (or Audio Devices)

In here go to Audio (tab at the top). On the sound playback device select, "Volume." Move the main audio playback slider up to increase the volume.

If for some reason there are no audio devices listed in the Sound control panel (unlikely), there is a possibility that your audio ports have been disabled (again, unlikely).

Go to your device manager by right-click My Computer (Either located in your start menu or on your desktop) and go to Properties. Now select, "Hardware." In here click the button, "Device Manager."

The device manager should appear. Look at, "Sound, video, and game controllers." If anything in this category is listed as disabled try enabling it, then exit the device manager.

There is no sound

Plug the speakers into the green connector first of all.

Make sure the speakers/amplifier are working on another source.

Since you have the volume control on your systray (it is there, right?), you do have an audio card installed (or integrated one at least).

You might try this forum also to troubleshoot the error message about there being no mixer device:

http://forums.techarena.in/showthread.php?t=44823

This has to do with a WinXP WIndows Update perhaps.

There is no sound

Audio drivers for this, for Windows XP, are listed here -

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=366264&lang=en

Now, you stated there was no Audio device listed in the device manager. Are there and PCI Devices or Multimedia devices listed under the OTHER DEVICES section in the device manager?? Possibly with a yellow question mark listed next to them?? If so, then that may be your audio device, and the link above will send you to the correct page for XP drivers for your machine.

If there are no OTHER DEVICES listed, and nothing with a yellow question mark in the device manager, then it may be a hardware issue. Could be that the audio is turned off in the bios, or simply just bad. For which, the fix, would be just installing a PCI sound card.

Hope this helps, if not, let me know if you need further assistance.
