Question about Sony KP-51WS510 51" Rear Projection HDTV-Ready Television

Covergence replaced ic's

First off thank you for your time!
I have a nice sony kp51ws510 from a guy at work who said the covergence was out. It was just the blue which I have delt with before on another t.v. I knew it was the ic's so I replaced them right away (I used generic stk392-560). I used what I thought was a nice amount of artic silver thermal compund for the heatsinks and my soldering was nice and neat. The set worked great for about a month or two. Just last nite I was hanging a speaker above the t.v. ( didn't slam it or anything) and when I came down and looked at it, I noticed all of the colors are out now and bowing or concaving in the upper left corner. It is BAD! Could this be bad ic's again or somthing else? Maybe because they were generic?
Any help would be greatly praised!!
Thanks again,

    Thank you sir,

Unfortunatly I already replaced the ic's because I had another thread that got an answer before you. I replaced them and it is doing the same thing. Does this mean that I have to replace the resistors, pica fuses and the ic's for the third time? I am hoping that I can just do the resistors and fuses. I only had the set on for a second to notice the picture.

    Thank you very much again!

Well Josh, I am here to tell you, you are right. This is the problem you have when you replace the STK's and do not replace the return resistors. Atleast one thing you didn't need before were the small pica fuses, but now you might also. So yes you will need the amps again, and by the way this is the first time I am reading where someone used good compound on their IC's, They all need it but you are the first I've read that mentioned it. Hope this helps, and I wouldn't know off hand the resistors location without a schematic.

As a Technician I would, because it could cause some other part to be damaged. But if you don't you would be gambling!

Have Covergence problem on my Sony KP-51HW40

Actually yes! If you have access to the Professional Service Manual I believe they give you an area or B&W pictures or a very poor stick drawing of the TV Cabinet that shows which boards are which.
The convergence IC's are probably STS surround sound amplifiers and are sandwidched inbetween large heat sinks. There usually are two sets - one for horizontal controls and the other for the Verticle controls.

I have a sony projection tv model #KP51WS510 and I was told the convergance amplifier was going out and I was needing info about where it is located so I can change it out. Thanks

convergence output IC problem. convergence board would have to be removed - remove and replace 2 STK IC's and check the surrounding resistors. Shops usually charge between $200-$400 Be sure to vote/rate me if this helped Thanks!

When I try to do the manual converegence on my sony kp51ws510, I cannot get the squares around the + to change to red or blue and consiquently I cannot adjust the convergence. Flash focus works fine but...

You need to replace the convergence IC, They start with STK make sdure you get original stk IC's and not cheap china made or aftermarket parts as they will not lasts long in your set. if you pay less then 15 bucks for your IC that really is no bargain cause it is most likely an aftermarket IC

Sony rear projection convergence

This is a convergence problem that is either bad connections on the convergence ICs or defective ICs. IF you can solder and feel comfortable working inside the set, you can fiox this yourself. Let me know if you wish to attempt the repair and I'll post more details and instructions.

Hi Josh,
Was the stk392-560 a replacement for a 110? I have found that, even though the manufactures seem to recommend to replace the original ic's with a 560, sometimes the 560 don't work quite right, or don't hold up long. Also I'll mention, that probably 80% of the big screen projection problem I get in my shop are the convergance chip, so I am to the opion that there is not a good solution for fixing the problem long term. ( In my opion, the manufactors need to invent something better ). Spend the 50 tp 100 dollars again and replace both chips again, but I recommend the originals, and use ample heat sink compound ( these chips run real hot ). Also some of the manufactors have started installing cooling fans ( suggestion ). A omputer CPU fan works quite well. Good Luck
