I have a 500gig elements hard drive, up until yesterday it stopped working. Laptop recognises the hard drive but i cant access it, is there anyway of fixing it without loosing all the info that is on it? If not how is it possible to format it when it only recognises the usb connection and doesnt display the hard drive in My computer? Thanks

I have a similar situation. My WD 250GB has completely failed. Apparently to retrieve any data I need to find another one manufacturered around the same time. Anyone got any suggestions on how to do this?!!!! It was made on 02 Dec 2006. This seems like an impossible task to me. (But I have 100GB of data that would make it a worthwhile task if I could retrieve it!) Thanks.

Check the drive on any other system.

may be last time you were using the drive and system carsh or improper shutdown this can cause the drive damage.

Also may be a virus format the disk and try it.

ok then connect the drive to the system and insert bootable CD of XP and boot the system on the installation menu where the drive is selected to install windows. there do you see any [MBR] memory if there is then delete partion of [MBR] memory and again create partion and then format it.

    best of luck.

Hello...after moving pc and take of power of WD Elements 400, it didn't show up anymore in the My Computer screen and doesn't seem to work...no sound, just the burning blue light..what to do?

Disassemble the case, and remove the 400GB disk-drive.
Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive to some desktop computer, and see if you can still access the files.

Get the serial-number from the label on the top of the disk-drive, and access Western Digital's web-site, to check if the device is still under warranty. If it is, W.D. will replace it, at minimal cost to you.

If the warranty has expired, W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- you can buy another external disk-drive from W.D.'s web-site, at a significant discount.

HI, YOU MAY WANT TO TRY, REMOVE SECURITY FROM WITHIN THE SMARTWARE, THEN AND AS ALWAYS, MAKE SURE THAT THE DRIVE, WHEN BEING CONNECTED/DISCONNECTED, THAT THE PC IS COMPLETELY SHUTDOWN.............. I HOPE THIS HELPS.........JEFFXC

Western Digital Elements HD doing a clicking noise and no access

It might be the power adapter. I had one of these and two Maxtor external drives that just clicked that way and it turned out their adapters were bad. You can check with another adapter if you can borrow one from another drive, or use a replacement from Radio Shack. Make sure you get the same voltage and current rating marked on the original.

If the adapter isn't at fault, the small circuit board in the enclosure may be the trouble. You can remove the drive from the case and connect it to directly to a computer power supply to see if spins up properly.

If the drive still doesn't spin, it's bad. This is a common way for a drive to fail. Unfortunately, this leaves you with a drive that you can't read. Hopefully you've backed your important data up on CD or DVD.

My Elements 500 ext hard drive no longer appears on desktop

I did this on my PC. Took it to the shop (Harvey Norman). The techie reckons I got a spike across the terminals because I did not properly disconnect. He reformatted the drive for me. Unfortunately i lost everything on it (unrecoverable anyway he said). Worked fine till I got a problem with the transformer. Still working on that one. Know where to get a new transformer/power supply?

Western Digital Elements Hard Drive 1TB Stopped Working!?

Western digital drives are garbage, I was using western digital drives in customers pcs and they would often come back within a week that the new disk failed. This is unacceptable as my customers need there computers and its a bad reflection on me. Now i only use seagate or hitachi and I have never had a problem with either. I strongly urge anybody that reads this to avoid western digital at all costs.
