I have a Lacie 1TB Big Disk Extreme. It has recently developed a loud regular whirring noise, that goes on and off every few seconds. What should I do? Thanks! Adrian

The irregular clicking or chunking sound usually indicates that your hard drive is suffering from physical damage. immediately backup your data, your hard disk will die soon.

This problem can be caused by the following:

  • Head Crash
  • Bad Sectors
  • Mechanical Faults

If your hard disk is under warranty then you contact your manufacturer.
Hard disk drive occasionally produces a whirring sound when it searches for a file which is heavily fragmented. This is caused by the spinning platters as the read-write heads zoom back and forth to access the sectors where the data is stored. It is important to distinguish the whirling sound from the clicking sound. This whirring sound can be reduced by periodically defragmenting your hard drive. Defragmenting reorganizes the scattered data on the hard drive to make files and programs run faster. It relocates the commonly accessed files to the beginning of the hard disk where data can load at a faster rate.

My computer makes a highish pitched whirring noise every time it has to do something slightly difficult, typically a video or interactive things. What is it and can I fix it?

Yes, open the side cover and determine where the noise is coming from - Harddrive, fans, DVD/CD player, etc.. If it's the harddrive, start backing up your important data asap before it goes out completely. If it's a fan, power down the computer and clean the fan. If it's t DVD/CD drive, replace the drive.

My Asus netbook won't power up at all. The last time it powered up I was able to login then I heard a whirring sound and the screen went black. Now there are no lights whatsoever on the netbook.

The whirring sound came from the hard disk - either it has died or thepower sent to it was too little to make it work .
Remove the battery and try to boot in the BIOS with the netbook attached to the charger - if you can't do that then you have a hardware failure. Remove the hard disk and try again - if it fails even now then the motherboard is gone.

My 500gb wd "my book" is making weird noises and wont show up

The whirring noise is the heads trying to read hard drive and then the weird rubbing screech sound and not showing up in your pc. sounds like the drive is dead.

Loud whirring sound

Three things spin in a computer; the hard drive, the optical drive and the fan. If there are no disks in the optical drive (open it[them]), listen close, if the noise is from the front--- think hard drive, if it is in the back--- think fan. If it is in the front, back up all your data NOW. If it is in the back you need to replace the fan, (or perhaps just clean it) before the heat fries your motherboard.

My pc is making clicking and whiring noises

It sounds like you have a hard disk drive that's going bad. Take it to a computer expert and have them check it. The "clicks and whirs" might also be a cooling fan going bad.

Noise in hard disk

Hi,

Hard disk mechanical noise like clacking or slapping and whirring or fast clicking sound is caused by the actuator arm slapping against the stops.

Whatever is causing the noise, it is indicative of impending problem. Your best course of of action would be to immediately back-up the data stored in the said drive while it is still readable. Of course eventually, you would need to replace the drive. If it is your main drive, you can also clone it to a new drive and your swap will be relatively easy.

Good luck and kind regards..
