Access - reboot issues

I can not access router to make a secure network. It is only acting as a hub so I don't need a typical setup. I works fine not secured but I would like to change that. I feel I need to do a hard reboot. What is the correct technique?

Typically you unplug the router and wait several seconds. Then, you hold in the reset button while reconnecting the power adapter. Continue holding the reset button for 10seconds and then release and connect it to your computer. Then proceed with configuration; if that doesn't work, repeat the steps but hold the button for 20seconds. I hope this helps.

Wireless networks - 29
Installation speed and simplicity Installing a wireless LAN system can be fast and easy and eliminates the need to pull cables through walls and ceilings. Components of a wireless LAN To set up your Wireless network at home you need to have the following:

Access point (router)
Access points (routers) are two-way transceivers that broadcast data into the surrounding environment. Access points act as a mediator between wired and wireless network. Most routers have a built-in DSL modem that will allow you access to a high speed DSL internet connection. The ISP (Internet Service Provider) you have chosen normally supplies a modem/router with the subscription to their services. Read carefully the documentation supplied
with your Access point/router for detailed setup instructions

How to change my password

Change Router Passwords

Network security has become a very real and important issue.
The ability for people to access sensitive hardware and information is a critical issue and all the measures that can reasonably be put in place to stop this act should be implemented.

One way to protect your network hardware is to change the password for access to your router from the factory default to one that is unique and private.
Read on to learn more.

Open your Internet browser, type the address of the router into the URL address bar, and open it. The address is typically in the form of 192.168.X.X.
This is the local network address.

Enter the account name and password to open the router setup utility.
Navigate through the setup utility until you find the screen that will let you change the password. You will need to enter the old password to change it.

Decide on a new password that has good security to a hacker.
The best password is more than 8 characters and uses both lower case and upper case letters and numbers.

Some will allow you to use special characters also.
Do not make the password anything that can be found in a dictionary or any date of significance.

Enter the old password in the change password page of the router.
When prompted then enter the new password.

You will be asked to enter it twice to confirm that the correct password is entered.
Immediately, record the new password in some secure location that you can find if you forget it.

Confirm the password change on the router page and log off the router.
To check the information and that the router has been setup correctly with the new password, open the router address in the browser again and login with the new information.

If you are able to login, you have successfully changed the password.

Where do I find the network security key for my router

If it has a SSID and Security Key that has been setup, the person that set it up would have the Security Key. You didn't supply the Make or Model or device? Try to connect with a Ethernet Cable to verify the device is working properly. If it is connected to the computer with limited access it may be a computer issue? Reboot the Router and the computer, unplug the router, for 30 seconds or so, plug in, wait for self test, reboot computer, select the wireless from the list of Available Wireless Networks and connect. Post results.

It requires username and password how can i change this to setup my router to secure

Hi,

Welcome to Fixya. If you want to setup a password or security on your router you need to access the Wireless Settings Page. To access the router page you need a working computer that is connected to the router. To access the router page just open a browser then type 192.168.1.1, the Default username is blank and the password is admin. Go to the Wireless Tab select Wireless Security on the Dropdown next to Security Mode select either WEP or WPA. Then Personalize your Network Key. The Network Key serves as a password on your network to make it secure. Then Save the settings

If this works dont forget to say thanks. Thanks for using Fixya.

Then it ask for user name and password. Type user as "admin" and password as "admin" or "password" or blank. Then you can see configuration page of router. If you are still not able to access router with above ip then you need to RESET it for that press RESET button for 10 seconds it is in back side of router then all settings defaults..Then you can access it with above method. . I have a N wireless Belkin router model F5D8236-4 v2 which works fine with my windows 7 laptop but recently obtained a Kindle and it will not connect, refusing to accept my password. My son connects fine...

I suggest you check two things. 1.) Is your router operating only in "N" mode? 2.) The type of security your router is running maybe something that doesn't work with Kindles.
I looked up the spec on the Kindle. - (Check your router and confirm your using these settings). Supports public and private Wi-Fi networks or hotspots that use the 802.11b, 802.11g, or 802.11n (in b or g compatibility mode) standard with support for WEP, WPA and WPA2 security using password authentication; does not connect to WPA and WPA2 secured networks using 802.1X authentication methods; does not support connecting to ad-hoc (or peer-to-peer) Wi-Fi networks.
If your router is setup with these setting you could try turning off your security on the wireless function of the router just for a test. If the Kindle works without any security then you know that your mode/speed b/g/n is not the problem and you need to setup security differently on your router. If you can try the kindle some with free internet. McDonalds, coffees shop, library, etc. That would confirm the trouble is only at home or with the Kindle.... good luck Kindles are great, hope you get to enjoy it soon. P>S> maybe take it into staples or best buy and asked there tech to check it out.

How to setup laptop and desktop pc network using nexswitch sd080s router i have a samsung r60 laptop on vista and a desktop on xp . i have made sure they have the same workgroup name but i cant get them to...

What you have is not a router, it is only a switch. You need a router to get multiple PCs setup to access Internet. To help understand, a router can be a switch, but typically a consumer level switch is not a router. Workgroup name doesn't matter for accessing Internet, only for PCs to access each other's files.

You need to buy a router and use it instead of the switch. The router will be able to hand out multiple IP addresses with something called DHCP. This is the reason your current setup does not work, as you are only getting one IP address from your ISP, and the first PC to come online gets it, leaving the other with none. A router will hand out many addresses and then translate back to the ISP.

As far as a link, whatever router you buy will come with a manual for setup. The process is very simple.
