Dvd/rw my dvd/rw burner now acts as it is an dvd ram drive, when i put in a blank dvd to burn it says it it is a cd, have formated computer with full new install and even bought a new dvd/rw with same problem Any ideas david

I would try simply copying one of the already completed discs using a stable and well known burning program like Nero. Programs like Pinnacle can be very temperamental when exporting their projects to disc.

your cd burner is faulty change it. the lens of the burner is weak that is problem.

If it is in fact a Teac CD-Rewritable W58E CD-RW Burner, this will only burn CDs and not DVDs. If you put in a blank DVD you will get this error. You will need a burner that has DVD burning support.

If you have the sony CD RW DVD ROM then you can't burn the data in a blank DVD.

Because your Configuration is :
Read : CD / DVD
Write : CD

This means you have a combo drive. But to burn a DVD you should have DVD RW.

CD-RW drives can only read all CD-rom and CD-RW formats and read DVD formats but cannot write to a DVD, if you want to write a DVDs you need to buy a DVD-RW burner which can burn all CD-formats

Chek wtat is written on front panel
If it DVD-RW it can record only DVD-R blank, if it + so only +R
or DVD-RAM. If it is DVD +/- RW or RAM it can record any disk.
Also chek the speed for you DVD and disk you using.
If you dvd maximum speed for recording is for example 2.7, 4, 8 you should use only DVD with max speed 2.7, 4, 8 or 1-8, 1-16 etc. So they should be labeled the same as you DVD

Depends what software you are using to burn. Use Nero. then select dvd or cd or whatever. You must state what you are burning onto - you cant create a cd then put a blank dvd into the drive - common sense

DVD / CD-RW is usually a a combo drive
DVD PLAYER with CD BURNER

DVD-RW is a dvd rewritable drive

Your Burner is an all-in-one.(I think) It plays(and burns) cd's and dvd's. Whatever program you use to burn has not informed Windows of its true intentions yet...Which is to burn a dvd or a cd. It doesn't know what you are burning until something tells it to. Let me know what happens. Good Luck, Tim
