Hello- I have a ibook G3 running 10.3.9 and the wireless connection stopped. I changed out the air card, still nothing. Could this be a firmware issue, or a bigger hardware problem?

Try disconnecting the air card and pushing the wire back on it firmly.  Click on the wi/fi and type in your password.  Could be the little wire for wi/fi is broke.  Check Apple web site for updated drivers.  Update your OS to Tiger 10.4.11 if you got a new modem.

Cannot connect ibook g3 clamshell to internet using airport card

It's probably too old to use the current protocol of your wireless network. The G3 has been abandoned hardware for at least 7-8 years.

Just bought the apple ibook g3 clamshell

If you can detect wireless connections in your area, then you have a wireless card in your Apple.
You cannot connect to the Internet unless you have a DSL or cable modem that connects to an Internet Service Provider.
You can connect to the Internet using a public access WiFi hot spot, these are located at McDonalds, Star Bucks and at the airport etc. and some Internet Cafe. There maybe some charges for these Internet connection.

Ibook g3

First of all, you need an Airport card for the iBook G3, chech for example this link; http://popular.ebay.com/ns/Computers-Networking/Original-Airport-Card.html (you should buy one like this: 9deeeda.jpg

, there is a G4 card too, but your iBook doesn't support this one).
Next, install it;

Then, buy a wireless router that uses 802.11b/g or 802.11b. This is very important because your airport card doesn't support 802.11g, and install it, but don't protect your network with a WAP password, your iBook doesn't support this, but use WEP.
Then start your iBook, and click on the Airport icon in the right corner, select your network, type in the password and it will work!

My clamshell ibook shows signal but won't load sites...

Try with Safari or Firefox. If still no pages loading then your Airport is not connecting to the Internet. If you are using a cable modem contact your ISP for assistance.

Wireless router problems

I'm sorry that you have an ibook g3 but it's good that you are new to mac, there is still time to change.
However, neither of these are the cause of your problem.
You'll need to give your computer the correct password for the "router" that you are trying to access.

Airport card only works in same room as router

Do you have a cordless phone in the apartment?
how many rooms do you have and in which room is the signal low? What router do you have?

Intermittent Connectivity:
NOTE: Before following the steps in this article, check if your wireless computers have stable connection when connected to other wireless networks (hotspots).
This article assumes that all wireless computers are experiencing intermittent wireless connection with the router.
Frequent wireless disconnection can be caused by different factors such as:

  1. Wireless interference within the network.
  2. Wireless settings of the router are still set to default.
  3. Firmware is corrupted.
Reducing Wireless Interference
If you are experiencing frequent disconnection from the wireless network, it helps if you check the following factors, all of which can greatly affect your wireless signals:
your cordless telephone system (or even your neighbors’), or other nearby equipment. Try to change your router’s channel to 1 or 11 (the default channel is 6) and restart the wireless computers.
Physical obstructions: Your router or wireless computers may be losing connectivity because of physical obstacles such as walls and floors. Try to move the equipment to different locations to find a better link.

  • Placement of the router:
  • Router mfg'ssuggests that you place your router as high off the ground as possible. When placing the router in a high location, leave a distance of two feet between the router antenna tips, ceiling, and wall. If your signal passes through multiple floors, place the router on the upper-most floor, and high up in the room.
  • Surroundings: Keep the router away from large metal objects, bodies of water (fish tanks, bathrooms), and any electrical equipment including television sets, microwaves, radios, etc.
Customizing Wireless Settings of the Router
Having default wireless settings on the router may cause conflict with other routers within your network range. change the SSID (network name) and the Wireless Channel of your router. Also, if it is possible, enable the Wireless Security of your router.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe
