Well, it seems these units have a problem with the defrost heater and the timer. Mine have been replaced so many times that I no longer call the repair technician. I order the parts on line to have on hand when the unit goes out. I have wasted so much money on technicians that can't figure out why these parts are continuously going out. My husband and I change the parts ourselves now. This is a GE unit with the Kenmore name. Found the manufacturer specification sheet taped under the unit while cleaning one day. My unit is a total piece of _______. We are a military family and will soon be buying a new home. Needless to say, this refrigerator will not be used any longer. By the way, my unit was purchased July 2000, not very old for a machine that should be lasting at least 10 years. I was always a faithful Kenmore appliance user. Not any longer. Sears should be ashamed to have their name on this machine and GE should be replacing these machines without a thought.

Yes, I am having the same problem here in Atlanta and it has happened before. I have a side-by-side frost free refrigerator that has frost built up in the back of the freezer and my food has stopped cooling, when this started, I can't say for sure. We went out of town last Wednesday evening, came back on Monday, and I noticed my produce was molding. First I thought it was just old, so I threw it out, but the next moring I noticed my frozen fruit in the freezer side was soft and not frozen as I went to make a smoothie. I thought eating certain food without proper refrigeration could cause food poisioning and even death and perhaps is why my boyfried and I have been having digestive problems over the past couple of weeks! I purchased the Kenmore refrig from Sears in 2002. Now, sears wants me to pay them well over $250 for a 12 month service plan to fix this problem (assuming it does cost more than $500 to repair in the first place) or, alternatively, they will come out for $70 to give me an estimate on the repairs. Are they serious? Another 3rd party repair company wants to charge a $60 service call. I am simply going to unplug the darn thing, clean it out, and let it sit there a couple of days. If it still does not work when I turn it back on, I am going to let it sit there until it is time to renew my home warranty at add it then and buy a small one for the bedroom. I refuse to get suckered into the pay more for cheaper overseas built appliances and pay Sears again for the rest of my life to repair this piece of sh____!

A lot of the new model refrigerators are being made oversea's,cheaper parts and the copper is much thinner and doesnt last near as long, as well as other parts.Same goes for some A/C units, the copper coils are thinner and the average life is not at all near what it use to be, but again its back to the cheap overseas deal.So the retailer makes more money off a cheaper product.

Sounds like you have a frost blocked evaporator. That the term for a refrigerator which is not automatically defrosting. Unload the freezer, remove the shelves and the back wall out of the freezer, melt the frost with a hair dryer, replace the defrost heater at the bottom of the cooling coils and replace the white 1.5 inch long sensor at the top of the cooling coils.

This could be cause by several different problems. Here they are. Not enough R-134a freon. Severe frost behind back panel (inside freezer section) Conderser motor not running or running too slow to cool off compressor. Very dirty condenser. Excessive heat wll cause the compressor to over heat and warm up frig. It take about an hour for it to cool off and come back on. if you find out this problem let me know

Frost on back of freezer, not cooling right in both boxes

You probably have a defrost heater, timer, or temperature switch failure. The heater is the most common problem. What happens is frost has clogged the cooling coils and very little cold air is being circulated through it to do the cooling. Clean out the freezer and remove the back panel to thaw out with a hair drier or wet vac blower etc. Now find the cause.

If the freezer is staying cold it sounds like a defrost system problem. A bad timer, heater or thermostat can cause frost to build up on the coils and block air flow to the refrig side. Check out for troubleshooting the defroster problem.
There is a small duct between the freezer and refrigerator side if this is blocked the frig side won't cool.

Turn your refrigerator off and remove the back wall inside your freezer section. Use a hair dryer to melt off all the frost and ice. The frost was blocking the flow of air over those cooling coils, resulting in very little cooling. The most likely cause of this condition is burnt out defrost heater(s). It can also be caused by a bad defrost thermostat, air leakage like a door left open a long time or bad gaskets, or a bad defrost control.

You need to look inside the freezer at the rear wall cover and see if it is frosted over. If your refrigerator is not defrosting that can cause the refrigerator side and the freezer side also not to cool to the desired temp.

Your condenser where the heat is removed from the refrigeration system may be plugged with dust. The condenser is more than likely located in back of the refrigerator behind a removable panel. Remove the panel and clean it out. Reinstall the panel after you have cleaned the condenser.

Check the back wall of the freezer for frost buildup. If there is frost buildup on the back wall it indicates that there is a problem in the defrost circuit.

Note: The proper term is "More mature individual" , not old.
