This is a starting point (pretty general but most routers install this way)
1) Shut down the DSL/Cable modem
2) Install the router and power it up.
3) Power up the modem and wait for the
appropriate lights (power, ethernet, and activity – something along these
lines)
4) Connect the modem and router with an
ethernet cable (make sure to put the cable in the WAN port of the router).
5) Connect Port 1 on the router to the
NIC on the computer using ethernet cable and check to see there is a light at
the correct port.
6) Input your routers id (usually an IP
address or an URL) in the address bar of your browser (try just using IE for
now).
7) A window will open asking for a
username and password (these are given to you in the instructions of the
router).
8) Now you are in the configuration
page of your router (wireless most probably). Here you can set the encryption,
new passwords etc…
9) If everything goes alright and the
settings are successful you can now try the wireless connection.
10) At the computer with the wireless
connection, make sure the connection is on (you can use either the application
that came with the router or windows wireless configuration). Right click the
icon in the system tray and “view available networks”. If it comes up in a
window saying “Windows is not setup for wireless networks” then you must right
click on the correct icon in the tray..
