Apparently a common problem with 4-5 year old Kenmore and Whirlpool dryers. The paint is rubbed off the back panel by the felt seal attached to the rotating drum. The bare metal gets rusty from the damp clothes. The rust is rubbed off by the felt seal. The entire felt seal will turn brown. The stains are transfered to the clothes. The rust stains can generally be removed by additional cleaning.
I'm going to replace the felt seal on the drum, clean the rust off the back panel and see how long it lasts. Seal w/ adhesive is $30-40.
Some have suggested painting the back panel, but i don't think fresh paint is going to last long. The original paint was probably electrostatically applied and maybe baked on.

What's your problemI have an inglis royal 100 model 1a 86600 The white clothes come out with brown stains on them. It is old but seems to work well. Could it be the front gasket around the drum? I

there either is a rust mark on the tub or under the agitator oil could be leaking out or metal is rotting where the tranny shaft comes up under the agitator but like you said it's old and parts are starting to rust out and decay

I have a Whirlpool Duet front load dryer. It puts rust streaks on all of my clothes. I can not find the source of the rust.

The drum is stainless steel.
Maybe a nut or bolt is in the water flow tubing that is giving off rust.
looks like you are going to have to take off some of the tubes inside and have a look to see if you can find anything amiss.

My front loader gas Duet dryer has left brownish stains

Sounds like bad drum seals. Check all the way around the drum at the wall for sections of seals missing or an uneven gap around the drum at the wall.

Hope this helps.

Whirlpool Duet Washer/Dryer get brown streaks on clothing

The brown stains are likely coming from the felt drum seal. The OEM adhesive is tar based - and after time and use - breaks down.

You'll need a new felt seal - and the adhesive that is used should be silicone based... eliminating the brown streaks.

Whirlpool duet front loader washer/dryer

It is not the dryer causing the problem. We get the brown streaks on our white clothes before putting them in the dryer. I have ruined more white clothes over the past six months with this Duet washing machine!!! We also don't use bleach so I don't think it is the HE/Clorox combo that somebody mentioned earlier. Anybody know what exactly is causing this yet... before I throught the moldy stain causing Whirlpool duet out?

Washer and / or dryer causing stains

Better check the fabric softener dispenser because if at any time someone added undiluted softener it gum up and release at a later time especially on whites . The drum of dryer may have rust or paint missing inside or on the back , check this out . If drum is missing paint and wet clothing sets on that area long enough they will create rust .
