The following blog outlines some repair options for a lens error. They won't work for all cases, but they're worth a try if the camera's no longer under warranty:

When the camera is in take a picture mode, the view finder is black. When viewing pictures pictures previously taken, they are show on the view finder. Why is it black in this mode?

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, sometimes with lines, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open). To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

Hi I have a fujifilm f470 finepix camera. One

Hi,
Is it just the live view from the lens that you can't see ( totally blank screen), or are the icons visible?
If it still shows the icons but no live view then I suspect the shutter mechanism is stuck over the lens inside the camera.
Have a look at the lens and see if you can see the inner lens? You may have to adjust the zoom to bring the inner lens up to the end of the lens barrel.
If it is stuck then it will require removing and inspecting / cleaning.

Dark Screen

Your lens can not open the shutter, or CCD is dead. If you kept your camera in your pocket, most likely fine dust got in the lens and ultimetly between the shutter blades and now due to friction they can't open. But if you kept your camera clean, then it is dead CCD. You can have it fixed by replacing the CCD or the entire lens, but in particular this SD1000 camera the main board components can go wrong too. You can sell it "as is" on ebay for $50-70 and buy a working one for 80-90, the difference would be $20-30.

Won't take pictures.

The problem you are describing is a problem with a sensor that is behind the lens cover door on the front of the camera. It seems to have failed and needs to be replaced. Following are the instructions to send your camera to Olympus for service.

http://olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_servicerepair.asp

Olympus will charge a flat rate repair fee for this product if beyond the one year factory warranty or the warranty is voided. The cost is $83 plus your local sales tax. This covers parts and labor, factory cleaning and diagnostic check, 6 month warranty and the cost of shipping the product back to you is all included in that price.

I have a Canon PowerShot A40 and when I turn it on in the picture taking mode, it flashes E18 and turns off. I can view previous pictures. The lens doesn't open up either. Help!

E18 is a lens error message - Dirt may be in the lens mechanism. Canon can service it, although the camera is no longer in production.
