Essentially you can either use the recovery disk or use a MS Operating System installation disk which will allow you to rebuild the system from scratch. You will also need to have the drivers for the system which you can download from the following link for free

Reformat my computer to windows 7

ATTENTION!
Reformatting a computer will reset it to the factor image, all data must be backed up or it WILL be lost. There are several reasons to reformat a hard drive. A few reasons include but are not limited to: driver issues, virus, cleaning up, getting rid of the computer, etc.

RECOVERY DISKS!
Every new windows 7 owner should know that the new computers are not supplied with recovery disks anymore. The manufacturer allows the user to create one set of disks upon the purchase of a new machine. It is important to create the disks early as driver issues and viruses may arise. In order to create recovery disks on windows 7 you want to click on the start menu. Next, type in recovery in the Start Search option area. Next, click on recovery disk creation and follow the process. It will require that you have about 3 dvds or about 7 cds to create the recovery disk.

REFORMATING HARD DRIVE!
Once the recovery disks have been made reformatting windows 7 is quite simple. Insert the recovery disks into the cd/dvd tray on the machine. You are now going to want to turn the computer off. When the computer has turned off, go ahead and turn it back on. A screen should pop up asking you whether you want to boot from Hard Drive or Disk. Choose the disk option. After you make it this far it is a downhill process. Next you follow the on-screen instruction make sure you reformat the machine, not recover it.

I'm facing major problem of active desktop recovery. Also I'm unable to restore my active desktop.

If all fails, then the last resort would be Reformat Your Computer. Save Everything. When you do a Reformat, all data is lost.
I found this on the web. You can click on the link to see it more in view.

Otherwise You must boot either on/from USB DVD and using a third party boot disk, say UBCD, and use the "Tools" on that DVD or USB to format and do as you want.

My friend left his OPERATING SYSTEM disk at my house and when my computer got sick I Formatted MY Hard drive with his disk!!Being that he also had a Gateway (not the exact same model and 3 years older)with...

I think the problem lies with your dual core processor. Under Windows XP, these processors need to have the correct drivers installed to fully take advantage of the fact that they have 2 cores.
Try downloading and installing these drivers from the AMD website:
Dual core optimizer Processor driver
As always, back-up your important data, and preferrably create a restore point before going through with driver updates.
The radical choice is, obviously, to reformat using your own disk, as this should install correct drivers for all your hardware.

It won't start up normally, asks for recovery disk, which I cannot find

When you bought the computer, it should have had an application to create your recovery disks, if you didn't make those and you cannot boot into windows, then you will need to contact gateway support and purchase software recovery disks.

Reformat and Start new

Unfortunately, you cannot download the OS. You can, however, download the drivers directly from the Gateway website.

Gateway usually sells restore disks after asking you some basic questions. The disk should run you ~$20. Go to http://support.gateway.com/support/ask_gateway.asp and click on "Chat with Technical Support" and tell them your situation and what you need.

Good luck!
