Question about Sony DCR-VX2000 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

Sony VX2000 lens mold-how to gain access to clean?

I have a Sony VX2000 about 6 years old which has developed some mold on one of the lenses, the foremost one in behind two different levels of protective glass. I've removed the outer-most glass and am wondering how to remove the second and if need be, how to get in behind the lens if necessary. Also advice on best way to remove the mold would be good. Also have an intermittant problem when recording(filmming) with the early stage of tape sometimes not recording properly...i.e. sound dropping out on playback and loss of image data,multi-coloured blocks or lines over parts of image so wondering how best to clean video head and any other parts of the recording mechanism? Has recorded perfectly in the recent past, has been well looked after and is very precious to me because of the creative work I am doing with it. Also the motor sound whilst recording is being picked up by the camera now and didn't used to be. Thanks very much for any help you're able to offer.Tim.

Thanks very much for your quick and helpful response.I've tried a number of times to download the service manual using the link you gave me but the file will not open up on my mac computer ,there seems to be some missing file information.Do you know of any other links for the service manual? I have googled around a few times but not come up with anything satisfactory. Also a detail I left out in my original request was the 'E' off the end of Sony DCR VX2000E. My apologies for that. Thanks for any further help you may be able to offer. Tim.

Again, thanks for your quick response and for the search you did on my behalf...and it's a Sunday! Actually I managed to download parts 1 and 2 of the manual and to open the PDF file earlier today tho could not find anything regarding diss/assembly.Was going post a comment hopefully to save you any unnecessary bother but didn't anticipate you'd be on deck on a Sunday. I am receiving your encouraging message loud and clear re simply approaching my camera with the appropriate screwdriver and will do this...tho if diss/assembly instructions come to hand a.s.a.p. that'd be great. However I trust your advice and believe I've received my moneys worth already...tho I can see that this site is really about people helping people...excellent and thanks again.Tim.

YOu are going to need to open up the entire camera to get the far most lens out. the best way to clean it is with rubbing alcohol , if you need assistance in opening the camera straight out then you can download the service manual for your camera, but basically all you need to do is take all the screws out.

here is the link for the manual

Before you remove the lens element, consider this. Do you have a lens collimator and other equipment necessary to ensure proper alignment when you replace the element? If you don't, please leave lens disassembly/reassembly to a trained professional with the proper equipment.

My Sony DSC-F717 has mold inside of the lens. How may I disassemble the lens to clean the optics inside?

This is a relatively common job for cameras with removable lenses, but even then, best left to those with expert experience because of the precision required for reassembly. It is considerably more complicated for cameras that do not have removable lenses.
You might try camera stores in your area, but you best bet would be Sony service:

What is the use of MF lenses

Many manual focus lenses date to before the development of autofocus technology. Unlike every other Japanese camera manufacturers, Nikon has not changed their lens mount since the beginning. 50-year-old lenses fit and work fine on the newest camera bodies (except that there is no autofocusing, of course).

Also, for some uses you don't want to rely on autofocusing.

Dull/cloudy picture

If the set is 4-5 years old, it probably has dust on the lenses and mirror.
This can cause a murky picture.
If you can remove the front screen assembly, you can gain access to the lenses and mirror. Clean with a dry micro-fiber cloth very gently.
Hope this helps,

While turning in off softely press the lense in and out a couple of times. The lense would retract. If not fully, but most of the way, push the lense a little harder in until completely retract. If you turn it on, I should work fine. The reason the lense does not retract is most likely some dust in there somewhere. If it did not help, you would have to open the lense and clean it and close the lense.

I hope it helps,

Lens Hood Size

The VX2000 lens does have a 58mm diameter thread for filters etc. The 72mm refers to the focal range (Zoom) from 6mm to 72mm. The 58mmm lens hood should fit, but I strongly suggest you obtain a SONY OEM lens hood with lens cap. Goto or other professional camcorder sites for these items.
