The Samsung DVD V5500 is a DVD/VCR Combo.

The DVD is play only & the VCR can be used as a recorder.

My Philips DVD Recorder does not accept a DVD disc shows no disk. The DVD disc does not revolve. A CD disc revolves but shows junknown

Could be that you are using the wrong type of DVD ? There are two formats DVD+R, DVD+RW etc and DVD-R, DVD-RW etc. Some machines are capable of using either, others can use one of the two formats.
My other suggestion is that some machines are picky about which manufacturer's DVDs they will use.

Can I record programmes from tv whwn I have samsung dvd v5600

Afraid not! ... You need a Recordable DVD player to record TV programs....
The Samsung v4600 is just a DVD player, with no recording capabilities.

Have magnavox dvd recorder record direcTV DVR programs w/ hdtv

I am unfamiliar with this unit.
If you have scart connecters on both, connect av2 on the tv to av in on the recorder. set the recorder to record from av source.
You should now record a program, I think the static is the fact that composite is out from the dvd only, not an input, and in on the tv, not an output.

I would like to be able to record TV shows WITH subtitles/closed captions. I have a Hisense HD LCD TV with built in HD tuner. I would like to be able to record onto a DVD/VCR. I'm getting conflicting...

Hey, I have a deaf brother with this issue. What I done was route the AV output of the TV to the AV input of the recorder. Set your recorders source to AV1 (or whichever you use) and set your TV to the program you want to record, also turn subtitles on. Because you wont have your TV set to the input your DVD recorder is on, you won't be able to see the DVD recorders output, but thats fine. Just press record on the unit - you have to leave the TV on the channel it's recording. Now you should be recording TV with subtitles with no problem :D

Can the Magnavox Dvd player/VCP DV200MW8 record shows onto VHS's

unfortunately the machine is not a recording machine IE: it is a player only. However in todays day and age you can pick up a good used one at the goodwill for around 10-20 bucks that can record. hook up is easy, one cable in one out and presto you can record on a blank tape. just remember the begining of a blank tape always has a few seconds of nothing on it so dont hit rec just as you are watching it start the machine about ten seconds early.
hope this was helpfull.

Recording with closed caption

Carl,
Better late than.. I think that the Polo can record the encoded closed captioning onto the HDD, but you have to have a CC equipped television to display the captioning.
The newer Magnavox and Philips recorders sold at Walmart record the captioning, and have the capability to display it even on sets without the built in CC decoder depending upon your recording settings. If you get a digital converter box and connect that as the source to your Polo, you can record CC displayed on the screen if you want.

Watch while recording

Make sure the DVD has RF lead and Scart lead connected in and also BOTH connected out to the TV. When you record from TV use channel numbers, when you record from cable use AV channel, (on DVD). When watching TV use TV channels 1 to 5, when watching Cable use AV channel, (on TV).
