Are you sure you put them in with the correct polarity facing the right way. Its a common mistake.
Also try a "known" set of batteries just to make sure.
Good luck

Battery Uses

If the rechargeable battery is more than 3 - 4 years old then the battery could be worn out. Rechargeable batteries have a finite number of charge and discharge cycles and will lose their charge capacity over time, i.e. won't charge to 100% and gradually the charge reduces until the battery won't charge up at all. OR The battery shows a 100% charge but when the adapter is disconnected the battery drops off to zero capacity in a very short time. If the battery drops to an unacceptable charge level then the battery needs to be replaced. Rechargeable batteries will fail if stored in a discharged state for long periods.

I have a problem with power on Olympus SP-550UZ

Try using regular batteries. I did with my camera and seems I can go a lot longer on the regular batteries verses the re-chargable ones

New battery is considered Empty

Some cameras, even the expensive Nikon professional cameras have the same problem. Sometimes turning it on and off fixes it, sometimes removing and reinserting the battery works. Sometimes, going into the menu and finding "reset" works.

My olynpus camera sp-310 shows battery empty when in fact I have new charged batteries in it

Your problem may be due to corrosion on the battery contacts inside the camera which can prevent the full power of the batteries from flowing into the camera. Try this free fix before you do anything else: remove the batteries and wipe the camera contacts firmly with a dry cloth (heavy corrosion may require cleaning with a wire brush, steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that may have fallen into the battery compartment during cleaning, then wipe both ends of the batteries and place them back in the camera. This cleaning clears the problem about 90% of the time. If it doesn't work for you, the camera may have a problem that requires professional repair.

When I load fully charged batteries it comes up with the 'battery low' warning and sometimes 'zoom error'

Believe it or not, the batteries are not fully charged.
1. Use alkyline batteries to test if camera is ok.
2. Carry a spare set of alkyline batteries
3. Don't mix battery types or mA sizes

If the camera was working fine "before" you made a setting change, try going into the setting and selecting "factory Default" That may correct the setting you may have experimented with. And, make sure your battery is fully charged first!
