Quantum fireball 40 not recognised as master

I am currently running my os on a seagate sata 320gb drive. I would like to run my os on my old Quantum 40gb. No matter what jumper or cable configuration I use, the tyan s5101 will only see the Quantum as a slave.

Goto the quantum site and verify the jumper setting on the drive first

if correct then.. check your sata cable is good...

check the bios to boot options so the quantum is set to boot...

under boot options .. hard drives.. sort the drive to be the first to boot

Will a Quantum Fireball hdd replace a Sata hdd. Both are 3.5 and 5/12v or do you need to re configure them?

SATA (serial ATA) is a connection type, not a brand of hard drive. Any brand of hard drive will replace any other, as long as they are both SATA drives. The data and power connections are standard between drives, as are mounting dimensions. Normally, with SATA drives there are no jumpers or other configuration you need to deal with. Each SATA drive has its own connection to the motherboard, so you don't need to set master/slave jumpers like you would on the parallel ATA drives using the wide data cable.

Configuring two hard drives

OK this one is easy.
For the IDE drive, simply make sure the Jumper is set for MASTER, and connct to the END of the ribbon cable.
With the SATA, it is just connect up and go.
