Pentax *ist DS digital SLR Autofocus problem

I have a Pentax *ist DS digital SLR which won't autofocus. When I set it to autofocus, it zooms itself out so the image is blurry and in the eyeview it shows the macro image and a hexagon flashes Help! What is wrong???!!!

I'm experiencing the same problem with my ist as well. It's not the lens, since I put the lens on another Pentax and it focuses just fine. The problem is in the body. I tried cleaning the contacts, but nothing has solved the problem.

I have the same problem with my ist DL. Mine will attempt to autofucus with quick short back and forth movements, but it never correctly focuses. If I try to manual focus while in auto focus mode I can feel the resistance as if it's trying, but no focus. I've tried everything to solve this problem and I've found that there are many people with similar issues with this camera. I'm disappointed in some of the responses that Pentax has made to people that sent their cameras in for repair for this issue only to be told it's a weak battery problem or that nothing is wrong with the camera. I've owned Pentax cameras all my life and this is the last one I will own.

Since I have the same problem and don't plan to ever buy another Pentax product after this problem surfaced, I decided to take mine apart to see if there was any visable problem with gears motor etc. I had the camera down to the point where I could see the motor that drives the autofocus, but nothng appeard to be obvious as a problem. I put it back to together and the camera is no worse or better than before, so I plan to take down even more on the next session taking it apart. I'll keep everybody posted on any progress.

Will the lenses I am using on my old school Pentax PZ1 SLR camera fit on Pentax digital cameras?

If the lenses are PK / PKA bayonet fitting, yes - if they are autofocus as well, this is a bonus, as that too should work. If they are M42 screw-fit, then you'll need an adapter, and all functions (zoom, focus, exposure) will be strictly manual.

Doesnt seem to work with the lens which was on my old K1000 which is a SMC Pentax-M1:2 50mm, serial number 5918334 any ideas?

Although your lens is an older manually operated K mount and will physically fit onto your camera, there are incompatibilities which limit the level to which it is compatible with your *ist DS.

Ignoring the really obvious difference that your lens is totally incapable of autofocus, the first real incompatibility is that your camera body has one of the "crippled" versions of the KAF (autofocus) mount. This means that it lacks the mechanical stop-down coupler/indicator used on the original K mount. The result is that your camera body does not sense which aperture the lens is set to and will not stop the lens down to the selected aperture when you press the shutter release. The full specification KAF mount maintains these old mechanical legacy couplings, but as most owners don't use older lenses any more the crippled KAF isn't an issue to most users and significantly reduces manufacturing costs. Crippled KAF lenses can still use some manual K lenses, but only the ones which have the A setting on the aperture ring and your lens pre-dates this development.

Your only realistic fixes for this are to either replace the camera body with a model supporting the full KAF mount (expensive) or to use later K lenses with the description SMC Pentax A instead of earlier SMC Pentax M. You'll still lack autofocus but as long as the lens aperture ring is set to the A position then it will work when the body is set to shutter priority and Automatic modes. There are far more Pentax A lenses remaining in good condition than Pentax M so you should have no trouble finding them, but because of their compatibility with later mounts you'll find that prices are somewhat higher.

Note that there is no adaptor which will allow you to improve compatibility between your present camera and the lens you have asked about.

I hope that I've answered your question, if so please take a moment to rate my reply. If not, perhaps you should add a comment to further explain in which way your camera doesn't work with your lens and I'll then try to assist you further.

No autofocus Bought second hand, everything works but autofocus with AF lenses

Clean the contacts on the camera body and the lens where they meet with a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol.

*IST DS autofocus

Try using another lens, if this solves the problem you have a lens problem. If not the camera is the problem.

Pentax *ist DS digital SLR Autofocus problem

Being an SLR camera, you should try another lens. It may be a servo fault in the lens. If the lens is okay, then it can be anything in the lens sensing, lens control drive circuits, and or lens to camera interface area. This would have to be properly diagnosed and serviced.

I BOUGHT A PENTAX K10D THAT CAME WITH A VERY NICE AUTO ZOOM LENS. I OWN SEVERAL OLDER PENTAX LENSES THAT I USED ON MY K1000 CAMERA AND I WANT TO USE THEM ON THE K10D. I CANNOT FIGURE OUT THE SETTINGS THAT...

Hello,

I don't own a K10D, but I do own a K100D which I have successfully used both manual focus & auto-focus lenses from my old Pentax stash!

1) If it is a manual focus lens, you need to turn off Autofocus on the body of your K10D. On my K100D, there is a switch on the side of the lens mount that says [-MF or -AF]. "-MF" is manual focus mode & "-AF" is autofocus mode. Since your lens doesn't have autofocus capability, turn it to the "-MF" mode.

Also . . . When I press "Menu" and go to "Custom Setting", I change two settings . . .

1) I change "Using aperture ring" to "Permitted". This allows you to use manual lenses (M lenses) that do not have an auto(exposure) setting, and also lets you use Auto lenses (A, KA, KA2, FA, etc.) in either the Auto or manual aperture setting modes.

2) I change "Fl with S lens used" so that even with a manual focus lens, although I don't have autofocus capability, my K100D beeps and shows a little red square in the viewfinder when I have successfully focused manually!

The K10D should have the same options.

This should get you up and running!

I have had a load of fun with my old lens on my new digital Pentax!

Take care & Happy Imaging!

Flash on ist DL

Looks like its true... Another major disadvantage. Removing TTL means removing one more hardware piece - TTL sensor. Pentax removed almost every nice feature, which needs some aditional or more expensive hardware: no TTL flash, less AF points, pentamirror... Seems like I bought Ds right in time.

Beginners question : Autofocus

In the custom settings, you can program the "ok" button of the 4-way controller to disable AF. It's kind of a handy little trick. It's called "Ok button when shooting" or something.
