Display very faint. external monitor no display.

A very faint laptop display is the result of a burned out CCFL light in your LCD panel. It is a mostly non-replaceable part. (very difficult repair). To use an external monitor right click on your desktop then go to the settings tab and change your display properties to dual display mode.

Periodically the screen is captured by horizontal lines completely across the screen. Cannot access programs or even shut down properly. Any suggestions. Presario 700 laptop using Windows Vista. Thanks

This issue is due to the malfunctioning of the screen or due to any other internal hardware malfunctioning of the notebook.

To further isolate the issue, I request you to connect the external monitor and check.

Once after connecting the external monitor, please tsp Fn+F3 Switch between the display and external monitor in the following order:

Display
External monitor
Display and external monitor

If the external display is fine then the issue either could be due the malfunctioning of the display cable connector between the screen of the notebook and motherboard or due to the malfunctioning of the screen.

As this the hardware issue, Please contact the nearest repair center to get it resolved.

I got a new power coed and now the screen on my laptop is green and fuzzy

check if its the monitor/lcd or the videocard is the one having problems, try to hook a known good external monitor. if it has the same bad display, its the videocard. if it has good display, then the lcd/monitor is the part you need to replace. also try different adaptor and see if problem persists.

Trying to open my wd passport external drve, with my compaq presario 700 laptop ,it will not open it

if your external hdd works fine with other computers, then the USB ports on your motherboard does not provide sufficient power to start your external HDD you may use a dual usb cable like this
http://www.cooldrives.com/usb-power-cable-mini-b.html

if your external hdd works the same with other computers then it may be one of two reasons 1- the usb controller inside the external cage
2- physical problem on the hdd it self

Monitor

When you said "Monitor", does it means internal LCD screen or external monitor?
Have you checked the "Power Options" in the "Control Panel"?

Laptop will only boot/power on when external monitor is attached

Sounds to me like you have a short inside your system somewhere, or you have a faulty display/graphics card is going bad. You will probably have to replace your display and/or graphics card. On most laptops, if they dont have a dedicated graphics card, and they use an embedded one, then the whole screen has to be replaced. if the graphics card Is dedicated, then you probably can just have the card replaced, and not the whole screen.

Sounds like your builtin graphics controller went bad.
