open hp director (click on the hp director icon) on the computer

if that does not work, click on settings on the top, scan settings and preferences, select scan document settings or scan picture settings or the scan preferences menu

if you have installed software for your pritner on computer, there must be an icon for hp director on desktop. open hp director window by double clicking on it. then you will get options for scan picture and scan document on this window. hit any one of them to start scan.
If you have loaded the software for the printer/scanner. Go to your HP director Icon and start this program. you should see your Scanner / printer listed under Select device.
You can place a document/picture in the document feeder on top. OR you can place the document / picture directly on the glass. (Lift the hinged lid to reveal the scanner glass) Don't worry the document feeder uses a different scan wand. Now document / picture in place select the Scan document or Scan picture icon from the HP director. Depending on which type of document you have placed in / on the scanner.
Scanner should warm up then scan presenting you with a preview image. From here you can decide what and where to go.
You are not limited to just the HP director. Other applications can use the twain source to activate your scanner software. This will transfer the scan to your application. Irfanview is a prime example. Image viewer that will let you "Acquire" and image from you scanner. Be sure to select the twain source.
Are you able to make copies only (just press copy color or copy balck and check)
And are you able to scan pictures.
If yes then make sure you are scanning from HP Director as Scan documents and follow the on screen direction.
If you do not get the option to scan documents then in HP Director go to> Settings> Scan Documents settings> You will see a option saying promt for these setting at the time of Scan> Put a check mark on that and click on Apply and ok and then try scanning document.
If this does not work the go to Start> Control panel (or Start> Settings> Control panel> Then printer and other hardware or Scanners and cameras> then Right click on the Printer icon> and scan from the options there.
I had this problem. If you like my solution please consider making a small contribution (e.g. 1$) to a charity of your choice.
For use on Windows Vista Launch "Windows Photo Gallery", click on file and select "Import from camera or scanner". If your scanner is connected and powered up, your device(e.g Hp psc 1110) should be displayed in the "Scanners and Camera" section. Double click on your scanner in this window. A dialog box should be displayed. It will allow you to set scan characteristics and preview your scan. happy scanning !!
As far as i know "HP Director" has been replaced on Vista with the method described above.
Perform a clean and "No bloated" installation of the hardware. Uninstall ALL the HP printer software, disconnect the PSC and reboot the computer. When windows finish to load, connect the PSC again, the new hardware wizard will show up, follow the instructions with the HP Installation disk in the drive. IMPORTANT: When a silver sand glass show up in the screen, CANCEL the installation of the HP software (this is by clicking "CANCEL" button or by no accepting the license terms). This will install only the PSC Drivers and nothing else. Use a TWAIN compatible program (Windows imaging, photoshop, paint shop pro) and try scanning again.
i have a Vista system and an old hp 1315. the CD driver that came with it includes some very useful software that cannot be installed in my laptop. according to the hp website, that's because Vista comes with a compatible software for my hardware. checking Windows Help & Support gave me this solution:
Open to Windows Photo Gallery, click File then click Import from Camera or Scanner.
