An available source of an alternative , functional, and reasonable fit in the slot ( a secure fit and allows the lid to close normally ), may be found on eBay - See Item # 140504970431. There are pretty much only two types. ide and sata. Examine the old hard drive carefully, usually they have an extra connector connected. Take the old one off the old hard drive and swap it. If you can take a pictures and load it up to photobucket or something. That would help.
Remove the DVD drive, and then there are 4 outer screws holding the hard drive chassis in place. There are also 4 inner screws that hold the hard drive to the removable hard drive chassis, those do not have to be removed to remove the hard drive from the computer. Carefully remove the screws so they don't fall into the holes on the sides of the screws, and then slide the hard drive out of the pin slots.
you dont need a caddy if the hard drive can be connected without it. just put a piece of doubled tape on the front edge as a handle to allow you to remove it easy. if the drive is loose place a small wedge of foam beside or atop it
