Samsung CLX-3160FN prints and copies fine but can't scan

I've tried to install and uninstall about hundred times now, ond it still says "failure while scanning" and "cannot open device: Samsung CLX-3160 Series"

    i cant make copy beacause it says scan locked and fax as well

    I have the same problem when connected through the ethernet interface. Samsung says it is nomal. I can't believe it.

    In the same way I can only send faxes from the PC if connected via USB.

    INCREDIBLE!!!

This may be obvious, but there's a "scanner lock" on this machine. It ships locked, and you need to unlock it when you receive it. Look up under where the paper comes out when you print, and on the left there's a little green switch. Make sure it's pulled towards you (you can see it also through the glass on the scanner bed).

You will need to replace the imaging unit. It the part where the toner cartridges and waste toner tank sits. The part number is CLP-R300A. You can find it online or at your local office supply store.

No communication between scanner and computer - Printer is ok
It may or may not work, but try installing as Administrator and setting the program's EXE into "Compatability Mode for XP SP2",and also, running as Administrator. Windows Vista often just doesn't want to support any hardware over like a a couple of years old... Drivers are a HUGE issue. Especially for older stuff. Compatability Mode is one way round it but not always.

Hmm Tricky,
You could try temporaily disabling the windows firewall, and any anti-virus firewalls to see if they are blocking communications to the scanner.

Cant receive faxes
Did you try to check the toner?

Try to print if the copy is lighter than before or it cant copy or print then you need to replace your toner cartridge.

Vertical line on page when scanning/faxing
Clean the scanner glass. You probably have some dirt or whiteout on it. Open up the top feeder and look at the narrow glass and you'll probably find it.

Samsung 3160fn
This is a multifunctional unit: it copies, prints, faxes and scans. There are three green buttons listed as "FAX", "COPY" and "SCAN". You need to press COPY if you want to make copies, since the default setting is FAX. The user's manual contained in the CD will show you how to change the default setting to COPY.
