GE Spacemaker XL 1800 - turntable issues

My microwave makes a horrible grinding noise when turned on. And now the turntable will hardly turn. I'm pretty handy and think I can fix whatever the problem is if I can get instruction and track down parts. Thanks!

I am having the same problem. How do you replace?

I replaced the synchronous motor but the grinding sound contines. It seems as though there is another set of gears involved and I can't figure out how to grease/lubricate/replace them.

Having the same problem (grinding sound made by the turntable). When we turn off the turntable the sound stops. Is there any other solutions or practical experience by anyone that fixed this problem?
    Thanks very much.

Same problem here. My turntable does not make a grinding sound.. but the turntable slows to a crawl if any weight is put on it. The heavier the object the slower it will go....examples....a 1/2 gallon container of ice cream will not turn at all....a bag of popcorn causes about 1/2 speed from when it was new.

Any fix for this would be appreciated.

GE Profile Spacemaker XL1800 microwave turntable

The turntable system consists of the motor, the coupler, the turntable support with rollers, and the tray.

You can see and hear a video of how a turntable motor should sound when you rotate it by hand.

If yours is not set to be off via the control panel, and it won't rotate or it sounds like it's grinding, etc., you may have a bad motor or plastic coupler.

To replace either, you need to unplug power, then remove the bottom cover of the oven.

On some, you have to cut the motor cover off with snips, then use a screw when reassembling it.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number from the tag on the oven here.

GE Spacemaker XL 1800 Making a grinding noise. Can it be fixed or is it under warranty?

Under warranty or not? You would know that by your date of purchase receipt. I don't know the warranty arrangement in your country.
If it is making a harsh sound, you may have a short circuit magnetron or diode pack.
If it is just making a grinding noise, it could be the turntable motor. Without more information, I cannot tell.
Spare parts are available through a GE stockist or microwave repair shop.
Hope this helps.

It sounds like the main transformer has failed. It would be cheaper to replace the whole microwave than repair this one. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Wont heat food

It could be that the "grinding" noise was actually "arcing" taking place inside the cavity or uder the cover. The magnatron is possibly damaged or the h.v. diode. Should be repaired by qualified repairman
