This is always tricky with 1st generation iPod touches. After a while they can't handle the new software anymore and some functions won't work anymore. Maybe try to downgrade the software. Otherwise you should probably get a new iPod.
I have a panasonic home theatre and my ipod connects in the front of the system. The cable is basically a headphone cable with the same JACK at either end. In short the system is the headphone but you don't put it in your ears!!. You can pick these cables up from virtually any electrical retailer for less than the price of a pint!
