Burning smell and smoke

I used my Eureka Upright Altima vacuum yesterday as usual and I started to smell burning. I turned the vacuum off and say smoke. I checked the belt, the dust cup is clean and nothing appears to be clogging the hose. Please advise.

Yes, the belt is turning the brushes. The suction is good. Could the motor be burning up? The vacuum is only one year old.

The smoke looks like it is coming from just below the Hepa filter.

I have the same problem i was vacumming and a burrning smell started, turned it off and smoke came out of it, i though it was the belt, I checked it but the belt was fine, could it be the rotatory brush? and if it is can I buy it on line?

I have the same vacuum and I've also been experiencing the smoke/burning smell. I only bought the device a year ago so this is extremely frustrating. I only live in a 500 square foot apartment (with even less carpetting!) I have to stop every few minutes to let the vacuum cool down before I can continue. Has anyone found a solution to the problem (oth than the local dump?)

I occasionally run into a similar problem. Whenever I start using the attachment hose or the bare floor setting I tend to notice a burning smell. The front of the vacuum around the HEPA filter gets very hot too. I check out the belts and make sure everything is running fine, and I never find a noticable problem. The burning smell comes and goes. I wonder if I need to replace the HEPA filter, but I just put in a new one in a month ago. Any suggestions are appreciated!

I ran into a scenario similar to this at work. With the burning smell and smoke combined, it leaves only one problem remaining; the motor. The motor and the pulley that enables the belt to spin could be malfunctioning (causing friction between the 2 parts) and thus causes the burning smell and the smoke. I'd highly advise not to touch either part after having the unit on (YOU WILL BURN YOURSELF).

The only other likely possibility is to make sure there aren't any hairs caught in or around the motor and the bearings of the agitator.

When you turn it the belt turning the brushes? Something may be caught causing the brushes to stick and the belt to just grind the brush assembly.

I don't think so. Usually when motors go bad they just stop working. I would still lean towards something rubber being caught somewhere between the brushes. Maybe check the alignment of the motor and the brush head. Check to make sure the belt itself isn't wobbling excessively. When the smoke comes out...where is it coming from? The body of the vacuum or the head?

Eureka maxima vacuum smokes and smells like rubber burning..whats wrong with it..the brush turns but seems like its blowing outwards too

when you get a burning rubber smell, the drive belt is usually slipping on the motor due to friction on the brushes. Remove the belt and free all the tangled hair to allow the brushes to rotate very easily and then put a new belt on.

My eureka vacuum won't suction and starts to smoke when I try to use it. It sounds like it is suctioning when I first turn it on, but after about 20 seconds it begins to smell like burning and does not...

The problem is that your belt is stretched and worn. This causes that burning smell and it also causes the vacuum to not pick up well. You need to replace the belt. Here is the belt you need and the manual with instructions:

The belt is probably worn and slipping, that is why it smells. Here is a link to the owners manual which has instructions and a link to the belt you need.

How do I to change the belt on an eureka altima 12?

the belt is on the bottom right (looking at it from the front). the Eureka website does have the manual for download,

With the vacuum flattened (straightened) out, turn it over and remove the back roller cover, (2 screws) once off, the roller should just pop out on the opposite side (opposite from the belt). Don't forget to turn the roller to center the belt once you have it on.

Burning smell/lost suction

Is the brush roll turning while on the carpet. If the belt is old, then it has stretched and will slip causing a rubber smell. But if it is an electrical smell, then your motor is failing and will need to be replaced.
