A piece of paper got crooked and fed through all wrinkled when it was printing the fax report. I removed it, but now the display keeps saying to open cover - paper jam. We can't receive faxes while it's doing that.

If it's from your side just turn the device off, if it's from the other side (if you sent a fax over to someone) then it's in their memory and you can't do anything about it. For further help consult the manual here: Brother Intellifax 1270e manual

Press the Mode button that has TEL/FAX , TEL , FAX. Press the button until the light beside the FAX mode is lit up. That is it! Should pick up on its own. Hope this worked for you!
My Mode was wrong. I switched it to telephone and fax (instead of manual). Then i set the ring to pick up on the third ring. now i dont have to be here to press start everytime a fax comes. I found all the information by searching for the manual on line it is under "Basic fax settings"
You can get manual from brothers website you need to turn the fax's destintive ring feature to on. I'm not sure without one in front of me but it is something like menu 0 4 1 have a search on keyboard or goto bro website
