If you can read the tag on your rear differential cover it will tell you there.
But just in case it's rusted beyond visibility here is what you need.
A traction lock (limited slip) differential takes the synthetic 75w140. You may need some of Fords limited slip additive to prevent the clutch plates from grabbing as well.
Conventional differential takes 80w90 no additive required.
If you are not sure what yours is jack up the rear end, support it properly and block the wheels to keep it from rolling..
If yours is 4 wheel drive make sure it is disengaged and put it in neutral.
Do not start engine. Grab one rear wheel and rotate it. If the wheel on the opposite side rotates the same direction it is traction lock

What is a good synthetic diff fluid for 98 explorer 4X4 and a 98 ranger2X4? and what quantity should I purchase for each I am replacing both covers?

RedLine makes very good differential fluids. The fluid in the rear differential is going to be 75w140 and as far as the front differential,I would check with the parts store for that.It could be 75w90 or 75w140. You should get about 2 quarts of fluid for each differential. The transfer case is going to use Mercon V(5).About 2 quarts for that as well.

Rear Diffrantial Leak 98' Ford Explorer

It should be that easy if the leak is from the gasket. If it from the seal, you will have to remove the drive shaft from the differential and remove the seal and put in a new one. Either way, the repair is fairly easy.

Ford Explorer leaking rear differential fluid

Time to drain and replace the fluid. The gear lube does not last long in these rear differentials. Use Valvoline 85-140 weight semi-synthetic. It will slow or even stop the leak and prevent future wear. Only replace the seals if the leak gets bad. Hint: the fill plug is 3/8" socket wrench, the drain is 3/4" socket wrench. Attach a short length of vinyl tubing to bottle to fill the differential.

01 ford explorer sport trac rear timing chain diagram

There is a detailed explanation in the ford workshop manual for this, and some special tools are required to get the timing right. I would not recommend doing this without the special tools. Contact your local ford dealer, they might loan you the tools and the manual for a fee.
Hope this helps, Mark

Holling noise?

Chances are you have a wheel bearing that's gone bad. You may also have a rear differential bearing bad.

Ford explorer and ford explorer sport trac same exterior parts?

Above is correct, some body panels are interchangeable some aren't...Headlights, front fenders, hood yes. Doors unsure, bed and back no (obviously). The underpinnings (suspension) are similar, but not exact...and depending on the year, the Explorer went to independent rear suspension, while the sport trac kept the solid axle differential.
