Have an old power-mate 116. The height adjustment switch is not working and would like to take apart roller brush compartment to attempt repair. How do you get bottom plate separated from to cover?
Re: Have an old power-mate 116. The height adjustment
Push in on each side of the light cover on top and it will pop off. Then you can remove the (2) access screws. With the screws out the top cover will separate from the base.

If the height adjustment on your Bissell PowerForce Helix Turbo Rewind vacuum is not functioning properly, there are a few things you can try to fix it:
Make sure that the height adjustment lever is being pressed down all the way. Sometimes the lever can get stuck in the "up" position, which prevents the height adjustment from working.
Check the height adjustment mechanism to make sure it is not damaged or obstructed. This may involve removing the vacuum's dustbin or base plate to access the mechanism.
If the height adjustment lever and mechanism are functioning properly, the problem could be with the vacuum's belt. The belt is responsible for driving the height adjustment mechanism, and if it is stretched or damaged, it may not be able to move the mechanism properly. In this case, you may need to replace the belt.
If none of these solutions fix the problem, the vacuum's internal hardware may be faulty and will need to be repaired or replaced. You may need to seek the assistance of a professional for this type of repair.
My powermate has a little pedal on the bag of the beaterbar housing that you press all the way down with your foot and then release. Each time you press down it changes the height from 'xlo' to 'lo' to 'med' to 'high' and then it starts over again.
See the attached picture
Manual says to tilt the vacuum back so the front wheels are off the ground (unit turned off of course) and make the adjustment. May take some back-and-forth force, but should adjust. If not, then something is jamming the switch.
Just pulled mine apart and the bearing on the belt side is toast.
In the past five years I have had several items fail due to less then optimal bearings. Including a transmission in a Vibe and a front load washing machine.
If you're talking about the belt that drives the brush in the power "head," you can replace it without the help of a manual. I did, and I'm certainly no mechanic. --Mike T
I wasn't able to find the manual for the Kenmore model, however I did find the instruction manual for the corresponding Panasonic canister vacuum cleaner. Your particular Kenmore model is actually made by Panasonic for Sears, and then Sears puts the Kenmore name on the vacuum cleaner. They are identical internally, and have the same parts and components, besides the filter that is behind the bag. Sears makes Panasonic put a specially designed filter in the Kenmore's so that the customer has to go back and purchase that filter from Sears.

Posted by rfrazelle on Jun 23, 2008 My old canister model 116 followed with numbers 2839580 marked Kenmore 3.9 with power-mate, worked fine until the bag got overly full. I have changed the bag, cleaned the filter, and removed a nasty hair/fur/dust clog :-p from the lower metal tube of the power mate. It now has very weak suction and won't pick up anything. I suspect a clog in the grey plastic flexible tubing attached to the canister but cannot get it apart. Advice? RJ Hello, I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Kenmore 22313 Bagged Canister Vacuum. The best way to find a clog in an electric hose is to use a steel ball or a large marble to place inside the hose and to let it so threw as far as it can to determine where the hose clog is. Once you have determined where the hose clog is then you can use a small end of a broom handle of take an old wire coat hanger and place a hook on the end and try to pull the clog out of the electric hose – the electric hose is very expensive so try not to damage the hose in any way, shape or form. Or another way is that id you have another canister vacuum you can try to pull the clog apart by using two vacuums turned on and running. If you are successful then run the round marble or steel ball thru the hose again and the clog should be cleared. http://www.sears.com/Customer Service1-800-4-MY-HOME1-800-469-4663 Thanks, Don the Vac Man Go Ahead. The height adjust mech. has 2 tabs, that you have to unlock, It also is easier when you tip the power head so as not to puit pressure on the Ht. Adj. wheels. Use a flat blade screwdriver and if you look down bertween the ht. adj. mech. and the elboe where the wire is, you should be able to see the 2 tabs, just pry it away form the elbow and it will come off. When you put it back on, make sure all wires are routed where they were and tip powerhead, it will snap into place.
