You may have the encryption set on the drive - meaning it needs a password to access the Maxtor. Is this problem on the original computer you installed the Maxtor or on a different machine? Either way try reinstalling the Maxtor software. If you do not have it you can get it online at:

ALL FOLDERS ON MY USB HAVE BEEN CHANGED TO SHORT CUTS

This is usually a signal that a virus is at work. Check that your computer has been checked and is clear. Then check your thumb drives-all of them including your external hard drives.

Your WD HDD have been attacted by viruses for your computer or outside computer where you used it last. Make sure that you have an up to date antivirus software, scan your computer or the external hard drive, explore your computer, go to tools - folder options under view files & folders select show hidden files and folders apply and ok it.

My file became a shortcut icon in external hard disk

That's because you probably hit "copy shortcut" rather than "copy". Go back to your file and hit Ctrl-C then once you're back in your external folder hit Ctrl-V. That will copy and paste it.

What do I have to do to start copying file to the external hard drive. Looks like I am just getting shortcuts. The file folders have the small black arrow indicating a shortcut

Hi right click on the file you want to put on the ext. hard drive. You will see a option "send to" click that then choose the ext hard drive. This will sent the whole file and not just a shortcut. Thank you for using Fixya.com
