My laptop is dual boot with vista and xp. When booted with vista it works fine, where as when booted with XP it does not detect the wireless router at all.

N.B. When I used a wireless dongle (borrowed from my friend) to connect the router from XP it works fine. But the default wireless in the laptop is not detecting the router.

I have installed the driver Intel 3945ABG wireless network driver (supported for lenovo 3000 Y410 - my model) from the lenovo download site.
When I checked the driver properties at xp device management under "Advanced" tab I could not locate the settings for "SSID" whereas for my WG111v3 USB wireless adapter these settings are there.

Do you have two laptops, one with Vista and one with XP?
Can the XP laptop detect the wireless router?
If so check the wireless card settings on the Vista laptop (ie the SSID and the encryption setting) and configure the same settings on the wireless card on the XP laptop.

Now that you have given me more details , I will try to help you.

There can be two reasons why XP cannot see the router.

    1. The XP wireless driver is not installed or it is not working. Go to Device Manager the see if the wireless card is enabled and working. If not download and install the wireless card driver for your model laptop.

    2. The wireless card under XP has not been configured with the wireless router's settings. Check the the wireless router's SSID and encryption settings etc. and configure the wireless card with these settings. OR look at these settings of the wireless card under Vista and configure the wireless card under XP.

Wifi is not working while iam using in windows XP operating system

Hi Sivakumar133,

Some reasons why wifi stops working is due to corrupted driver or defective WLAN card. There are some ways on how to diagnose this problem, just reinstall the driver and configure it again with the wireless access point. You can download the WLAN driver for this particular system by visiting this link. You will notice that on the Networking Wireless LAN section it has 2 types of WLAN card, Broadcom and Intel. Just try to install the Broadcom driver because this is compatible with XP. If you're not sure what is the model of your WLAN just check it under device manager and look for Network adapter. After downloading, install the .exe file then restart the system. You can now configure again the computer to your router.

Hope it helps.

How to use wi fi in lenovo Y410

For your laptop if it has a built in wireless card like most do now all you have to do is go into your networks connections and select "connect to a network" or if you see in the middle part of the window "wireless connections are available" click that link choose the connection, put the password in if needed and then you should be connected and ready to go. If you want to do it on a home internet connection then you'll need a wireless router i suggest netgear or linksys they aren't too exspensive and work pretty well. They come with all the things you'll need with instructions on how to setup the wireless network.

Why does my WGT624 keep loosing connection. I would be on the Internet and for some reason, I would loose connection to the Internet. I have a Dell Inspiron...1521 computer.

In my case too this happened initially with my lenovo y410 laptop with netgeat router. In laptops if th ewireless network is set with "public" profile then the connection is sometimes dropped by the driver. If you or only a few persons are the only user(s) of your router and your WLAN is securely encrypted, then you can change the wireless settings of your laptop to be in "private" network, which will solve your problem.
