You have to power the unit via the mount by either using the cigar charger in the car or snap off the mount from the ball and socket and power it via the mains adapter.

Will a garmin gtm 20 charger work with a garmin nuvi 660 gps

Yes! The GTM-20 is a charger with a built-in traffic receiver. The charger plugs into the cradle for the Nuvi 660 and then the Nuvi 660 snaps into the cradle.

However to receive traffic with the GTM-20, you will need to purchase a subscription, either yearly or lifetime. The traffic receiver receives traffic information from FM radio broadcast stations, which broadcast traffic data.

My nuvi 660 seems to have "lost" the traffic portion . When I touch tools and go to look for traffic - or "settings" there is no settings . Could it be the GTM-20 FM transmitter is bad?...

If the GTM-20 Traffic Receiver is functioning, you should see a blue diamond on the main screen and you should be able to find a traffic icon in the menu.

If the diamond is grayed out, then the traffic receiver hasnt locked yet. If the traffic symbol is completely missing, then yes it could be a problem with the traffic receiver or the cradle or plug that plugs into the cradle.

The Nuvi 6xx receives traffic information from the GTM-20 receiver through the plug that plugs into the cradle.

How do i set up traffic mode

The traffic mode of this device comes up as a radio station that tell you how the traffic in some areas are. The traffic receiver is integrated in the vehicles power cable. You will need some components to set it up. You will need
  1. mini USB connector,
  2. External antenna connector,
  3. Internal antenna,
  4. Vehicle power adapter.
Once you connect these components together, your gps will be able to receive information on traffic. Then you connect it to your gps device, once there is traffic anywhere around your area, the gps receives an information. A traffic icon appears on the upper left corner of the map page. The traffic icon changes color to indicate the severity of traffic conditions on your route or the road you are currently driving on.

I bought the Nuvi 1490 which should have come with live traffic. It has never worked and I can't add it to my GPS

This is from Garmin's website,, regarding the Nuvi 1490T. If you haven't already done so, you might want to check and make sure you are in an area that does receive traffic coverage.

¹Lifetime traffic extends for the useful life of your Garmin traffic receiver (as long as you own a compatible Garmin GPS) or as long as Garmin receives traffic data from its traffic supplier, whichever is shorter. Traffic content not available for all areas. See for traffic coverage areas and for program License Agreement containing complete terms and conditions.

You have to purchase the external traffic receiver that plugs into your side mini-USB port in order to receive traffic information. This is not possible on a SD card.

When connects to power in the car, it thinks it is connecting to the computer.

if your charger not original garmin you should make this modification on mini usb port. tested works with non original chargers (min 500mA).
