In trying to remove 'My Book' from my computer, when clicking on Safely Remove Hardware I get the message 'Windows cannot stop the 'Generic Device'. This is despite all programmes having been closed?
Make sure you installed any drivers that came with the device, and if they didn't come with any try going to the Manufactures website and downloading the drivers.

The message says that some file(s) on the disk-drive are "open" -- compare it to hanging-up on a telephone-call while the other person is talking to you. The other person cannot finish his/her statement, and you cannot hear their complete statement. Similarly, Windows is still "using"
a file on the MyBook -- if you "forcibly" disconnect it, only "part" of the file will be written to it,
i.e,. an incomplete file will be present.
What you should do is just "shutdown" Windows, until your computer turns off.
Then, it's safe to unplug the USB device, and restart your computer.
You need to go to the Tool Bar, (bottom r/h side), and click on Safely Remove USB hardware. and choose your device and shut it down from here then remove.
You have to close all open files on that drive first - the drive cannot be stopped when there are files open on it. Try closing all the applications that use files from that disk, and also any windows in which you see the contents of the drive. Then try safe removal again.
Make sure you have all programs and folders closed. Then try stopping usb mass storage, there should be more then one option so try removing the drive itself on the list. If that doesn't work. I myself would probably just restart the computer. Then try again. Thanks, Lee
Two people above are retarded. It's a well known issue that M$ is too lazy to fix. Technically , closing programs that are using files/folders on the usb should work, but 99% of the time it doesnt work. Your best bet is to shut down windows, then unplug the usb device .
what is it? USB Safely Remove is a USB device manager. It saves time and
extends user abilities on active work with flash-drives, portable drives,
card readers and other gadgets.
This should be simple. It seems as though your PC is still communicating to your passport in the background. Make sure you are not copying/cutting and pasting anything to or from your passport.
Personally, I remove my thumbdrive without going through the proccess of: "Safely Removing Hardware". But this only because I know that my computer is no longer communicating to it, and because it not a matter of life and death to me if my data is erased.
But don't get me wrong, I do not reccomend pulling your device out "Unsafely". What I'm trying to say is, as a last resort, I would personally pull it out.
Anyway, completely shut down or disable all programs that may be communicating to this passport.
