How would a bar magnet orient itself relative to this planet’s magnetic field?

The magnetic field around the earth runs through the center of the earth and has the positive end at the arctic pole and the positive end at the antarctic pole
magnets have north and south poles ( positive and negative) that means that they align themselves with the negative end pointing north and the positive end pointing south
that is right --but any compass you have the N is pointed on the negative end and that is the direction where the north is

How would i define compass needle

A compass needle is a thin steel strip. It has been magnetized. It has a north end and a south end. If you can float the needle on water or balance it on a sharp point it will spin so the North end points north and the south end points south. People can use this to find their way.

My precor keeps saying start pedaling

The most common cause for the Timer to Stop After 7 Seconds on a Precor Elliptical is NO RPM Feedback.
Knowing the status of the unit from its last use as well as the last service or part replacement is a great place to start.
Check the connection of the speed sensor to the lower board. Reset connection if necessary.
Check the magnet. The magnet is located on the user's right crank arm on versions 1 and 2 and the user's left on version 3. The magnet passes the speed sensor with each revolution of the crank arm. The magnet should be installed so that its south pole is facing the speed sensor. You can check the magnet polarity with another magnet that has marked poles or a compass. The north pole of the marked magnet or the south facing needle should be attracted to the magnet. Correct magnet installtion if necessary.
You may also check the spacing of the speed sensor to the magnet. The spacing should be 1/8" to 1/4". Adjust if necessary.

How does a compass always point to due north?

"Due North," by definition, is the direction towards the earth's north pole; or, visually at night, towards Polaris, the north star. Therefore, compasses generally do NOT point towards due North but, rather, point towards "magnetic north," as the other responder described, which is a variably located at some distance from True North, depending upon where the north-locating compass is situated on our planet. In most circumstances magnetic North is close enough so that people are willing to accept it as North in general terms. However, depending on your location, and upon seasonal changes caused by Earth's wobbling rotation (called precession) true North can be many degrees off from magnetic (from your compass's) North. In those cases true North must be determined using declination charts, which will tell you how many degrees to add or subtract on you compass in order to determine true North by the Magnetic North your compass is pointing to. For example, if magnetic North is 10 degrees west of true North at your compass's location (that is, your compass is actually pointing 10 degrees to the "left" of North), then you would correct by considering the +10-degree bearing point on your compass dial as True North--and, likewise, add 10 degrees to any bearing line you happen to determine using your compass. You have one other way of finding True North, which is celestially, by sighting towards the Pole star, aka Polaris, aka the North Star...that is, providing that the sky is UNcloudy and unsunny enough for the star to be visible. Of course, that only works for those located in the morthern hemisphere. Those south of the equator have a "south pole" star but it is not as accurate as Polaris in the northern hemisphere.

I am about to re-glue the alternator magnets to the rotor of my 1989 Kawasaki ex500, I am not sure what arrangement to set them in as each magnet face has a north and south pole, can anyone help? I on

I would alternate them N-S-N-S. Technically it will still operate no matter how you place them. However, it should be most efficient to alternate the magnets.

Our tv is magnitized by our surround sound base speaker what can we do.

Hello. Here are the steps:
1.put your hands in the form like you would if you are about rub your hands together for warmth
2.Put the magnet between both hands at the palm areas
3.rub your hands together and turn the magnet so that the north and south ends magnetize the TV simultaneously
4.make sure you know where the north and south ends are located on the magnet
5.Hint - The Constant switching between the north and south polarizations causes the magnet to equalize the magnetized areas on the TV returning it to it's original color!
Regards, Joe
