Providing modem output to house addition

Trying to take the data output from my westell 327w modem to a new garage addition. The electrician put in about 80' of conventional eight strand wiring (not twisted) from the house to the garage and then put in cat5 from where this cable enters the garage to my computer location. This line coming from the house must also carry my phone connection. Can this be done, and if so, what colored wires get connected where. The electrician says he has done it this way successfully before. Maybe it works but is speed degraded since not cat5 all the way.

The cat 5 wire is 4 twisted pairs:

    1-blue and blue/white

Speed will definitely be degraded, possibly to the point of not working at all. But, it is possible to use the spare wires in your cat5 cable to carry a phone signal. The computer uses only 4 wires of the 8 in the cable. What are the colors of the wires in the cable ran by your electrician?

Looking at the image in the link below, your computer only uses the orange pair and the green pair. You could break out the blue pair and brown pair and actually run 2 separate phone lines through this cat5e cable also. For reference this image is shown with the end of the plug facing you. The only issue I see with this is to make sure you know which 4 wires you are using in the 12 wire cable and connect the orange pair and green pair to the same wires on both ends. (Do the same with the blue pair and brown pair for your phone line.) If you need any further assistance please feel free to contact me.

Connect your Earthlink Modem's RJ45 connector to your router's RJ45 WAN connector. The router should then provide wireless internet to other computers via their wireless cards.

Westell versalink 327w from bellsouth can't connect

Howdy,

I do not think this modem will work for you. Contact O.T.C. to be sure. For a few details...

I presume that you can access your Westell wireless modem/router 327w with the IP address of - 192.168.1.254. (Or you can simply type "launchmodem" in the address bar - (one word - no quotes)) This will definitely get you in. You will then see the setup menu. If you see the Bellsouth FastAccess Internet Service logo then you know you definitely have a Bellsouth modem.

Now, let's presume, you are using a Westell wireless modem/router 327w made for Bellsouth/ATT. If this is the case, as stated above, you will see the Bellsouth Logo on the setup page. Additionally, it is stated on the page below, that you cannot use a Bellsouth modem/router for any other ISP (Internet Service Provider) This is due to the Bellsouth/ATT firmware that Westell builds into this modem/router.

This is the page link:
http://www.dslreports.com/faq/bellsouth/3.141_Westell_327W__wireless__Info#13772

This is the relevant quote:
"The BellSouth supplied 327W (model C90-327W30-06) is made exclusively for BellSouth FastAccess. They are functionally different from retail Westells (or any model designed for use with other ISPs) and the firmware between them are not compatible and can not be interchanged."

That being said, you still might attempt to use this 327W with orlando telephone company but I do not know if it will work. (Doubtful...) I use the Bellsouth 327W and it is GREAT. (With Bsouth/ATT) Good luck.

P.S. - Please be advised that Westell does manufacture an identical 327W that does NOT have the Bellsouth/ATT firmware.installed. This is the "generic" version I suppose but I have no experience with this one. If you need more just ask. :)

Good luck,

J

Power supply for westell 327w

Replacing a power supply for the westell 327w is apparently a tricky thing. The official numbers are: Input: AC 100-240V 50/60Hz 21W Output: DC 12V 1000mA You should definitively read the last posting in this thread and see what this guy found out. If you can, try it! A lower voltage does not so any damage, but make sure the polarity on the connector is right. Very interesting! http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r20265443-power-supply-327w-what (Sorry - but fixya does not provide weblinks right now, so you have to copy the whole line and paste it into your browser.) If you have any more questions, just come back here and leave a comment - I'm happy to help.

Set to work with centurytel instead of bell south

Howdy - You may have a two fold problem here. First of all the Westell wireless modem/router 327w has the access IP address of - 192.168.1.254. (Or you can simply type "launchmodem" in the address bar - (one word - no quotes)) This will definitely get you in. You will then see the setup menu. That problem solved...
