Question about Dell Inspiron 8600 Notebook

Inspiron 8600 or 8600C

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600(?) laptop I bought in May of '04: specs 1.5GHz, 256MB, 40GB. So the problem is the keyboard controller is mostly dead (I get sporadic phantom keypresses whether or not a keyboard (USB or the stock laptop) is present.

So, I need to replace the motherboard. No problem: where do I locate the motherboard P/N on my current system so I can get the right one?? I can't tell if my system came with a F5326 or X1070.

You can get Dell motherboards for discontinued computers from vendors - just do a web search for you model computer and "mainboard" and you will find them.

F5236, X1070, and G2515 are all motherboard P/Ns for the Inspiron 8600/8600C. I have not been able to determine where the P/N is located on the mainboard. It must be, as there are at least three, possibly four motherboards for the 8600/8600C.

Purchasing the motherboard and migrating the peripherals (video card, mini PCI, processor, RAM, whatever else) is much cheaper than replacing the computer. Dell has an online Service Manual which provides step-by-step instructions for how to disassemble and reassemble the computer.

Please research before providing generic answers like 'just replace the computer' - while I'm no "guru", I know enough about my system to know that I can get and replace the motherboard for US $150-400; depending on the vendor. And, having done electronics assembly, I know that a P/N will be on the board. I just didn't want to strip my system down to look for it.

I didn't ask what the P/N was for my system: I asked if anyone knows where on the motherboard it is located...

There is no P/N for the motherboard, it is only the model say chipset type, slot type, your processor type, etc that matters. anyway i dont think you can get dell's motherboards in any computer shops. the best is to call the dell company and ask them to do it. They might need your Dell model no and serial number which will be on the backside of the laptop. ADVICE it is best to buy a new one in such problems.

That's great, you know a lot about the system, you said that there must be 3 or 4 motherboards for the model for 8600 / 8600c, why dont you try with the p/n or serial no: of your system to get the correct motherboard's details on the manufacturers web site, if its not there, then even a guru will not know what motherboard model is in your system unless you deassemble your system and have a look.

Try this, do a google search for apps to identify the motherboard make and model, i dont remember the correct apps for this, But it is there, these apps are dos programs, which will fetch you the motherboard's manufacturer and their details. You can try this.

Installing Memory

Yes, you can replace/upgrate the memory module under the keyboard.

Before you proceed, note that Dell Inspiron 2650 uses DDR200 3.3V SODIMM modules. Also, memory module capacities supported are 128MB and 256MB with a Maximum memory of 512MB. If the current memory installed is 128MB, you need to order 2x 256MB modules to replace/upgrade both memory slots. If the installed capacity is 256MB, you just need another 256MB for the slot underneath the laptop.

Check "Removing the Keyboard" for guide removing the keyboard to access the 2nd memory slot.

Read "Preparing to Work Inside the Computer" before committing to the above procedure.

Let me know how you get on.
